After a oil change on my truck I can smell what seems to be oil not as if it is burnt oil from a leak but like the smell of oil out of the bottle has anybody had this same odor coming through the vent on the interior of truck? Could it be a breather on the engine?

They all do it, it's normal. If you stop and idle for any period of time, click on the recirc button until you get moving again. It's the crank case vent.

My 99 and my 05 do it no worries!!!.

It is the smell from the crank case vent hose, i noticed a strong smell when a friend switched to sheaffer synthetic. Kinda wierd some oils smell different???

Thank you! I've noticed it only in the winter, probably from sitting while high idling. Do those Fresh Air Filter Kits from Geno's Garage do any good for this?

Bringing this back up. Has anyone had this happen, and do you know of a fix?

Take a look at TSB 09-02-00 over at the world famous Dave Fritz site: http://dodgeram. info/tsb/2000/09-02-00.htm

The likely cause of your problem in your second generation Ram are pointed to by these words in the TSB: "the integrity of the cowl seal should be verified".

Good luck!

I believe the "cowl seal" doesn't go from the extreme left side to the extreme right side? Is it supposed to?

Is their any danger of the 'fumes'? :D

The smell comes from oil vapor passed out of the crankcase and breather bottle. Rottela is famous for having a strong smell for the first 1000 or so miles nick named ro-smella. One reason most people use chevron delo 400.

I bought the filter kit for this reason and would say that it does not work for filtering odor. Dust particles maybe, odor no.

The cowl seal thing is interesting, but not much use to me. My vent bottle is routed down behind the cab and reminds me daily that it is there.

"Hey there's something smoking under your truck!"

I think that's what they're saying, can't hear 'em over the rattle :-laf

Neil,

An on-ramp is a terrible thing to waste

What really is the function of the cowl seal? It's that black thing that pushes up against the the metal on the firewall, right? Curious if that is connected with the vents, or if it just seals up the hood from the outside?
