To those who have pulled their heads, Has anyone noticed what looks to me like the gasket is fretting on the head? I see no evidence of this on the block. I can believe that the head in a small amount, moves around as it heats and cools as well as under combustion. I will try to get a picture to post here.

In our case, it is the abrasion noticed on the head or block caused by the head gasket and it is the result of heat creep and leads to blown gaskets.



Can anyone speak for what help the stud kit is in controling this problem? I have not seen a 6B engine with studs and have wondered about doing this on my engines. I am box stock but have considered some tinkering, ie 'the greenleaf method' or the DP (Daniel Pucket) method.

when i pulled the head off my engine, it was there. pretty bad too. had to take . 011" off to get rid of it, even though it was much flatter than that.
 
Swank, I would guess that I will be in the same boat. The head is still on my (kitchen?) table, as I am still cleaning up the ports, so I'll let Y'all know how much comes off of it when I get her to Billings.



PB, I think fretting is the right word, as it been a few years since school. If not I stand corrected. But it looks like the metal rings have worn into the head slightly. It runs the whole lenght of the head, but mostly on the exhaust side. The gasket marks do not show creep as such, they are in one spot and just the same size as the gasket itself.

YUP - an actual wear pattern embossed into the head/block surface from uneven expansion/contraction caused by the hot/cold cycling of the engine over time and miles...



And here we thought it was the aluminum heads on the GM diesels that was a problem! ;) :D :-laf
