Recently, I noticed the daytime running lights feature stayed active even when I shut off the ignition. Shortly after, I smelled electrical smoke. Opened the hood and saw white smoke streaming from the daytime running light module. Disconnected the harnessto the module and the smoke stopped. Phoned the dealer. He said he gets 2 or 3 of these per month. No big deal. Just pay $85. and you can have another. Yes, Chrysler did update the module once. No, it didn't help. It's still $85. and it still fails regularly. According to him, taking the harness off the module disables only the daytime running light feature and the hi-beams indicator lamp on the dash. Anyone else experience this problem? Probably only the Canadian trucks have this feature anyway.
Is anyone aware of an after-market upgrade for this module?

If not afermarket part. How about relay or ask around see if another make has better module or system(ford,gm,japan, german, sweden, british)that hasn't any problems see if will fit your needs or connections. If not convert it.
Parents have Buick with daytime running lights don't think they have had any problems.

It is a common problem, but then again i have seen other trucks that still have the orginal. Just resently i replaced one on a 94 and that was its first replacement. I have repaired other trucks that have had 2 or 3,seems just the luck of the draw. Knock on wood, mines a 97 and still original. Back to the smoke though,as many as i have changed,i cant say that i have seen one smoke as you describe.

I want to instal DTRL on my truck. Do you think that Canadian and US trucks are identical, except for the module? Or rather, if I buy a module, can I just plug it in and have DTRL?

I have a '96 truck that is from Canada but I live in the states and my daytime lights do not work at all do you guys think it might be the module? And is the module located on the drivers fenderwell bellow the master cylinder and booster and is there any way of checking it before I plunck down the money?

Thanks,
Paul

I've got a spare DTRLM brand new in the box, don't need it because I went with the Brite Box Sport lamp box which has daytime running lights built in. Anybody want to make me an offer? J.

No the canadian and u. s. trucks are not the same. The u. s. truck does not have the wiring harness available to just plug in the factory module. I have installed DRLM on u. s. trucks using an after market module. The only problem was in 99 they changed the ground and i had to use a module for an import. Cant remember off my head just exactly what it was on the ground circuit that is different. I must be getting old.

In 99 and up they went with a "switched" ground and not the "hot". The hot was switched before 99. There was another thread on this with an aftermarket supplier of the harness and parts to "convert" the US trucks to the DRL feature. just my 0. 015$ (cheap opinions are just what u pay 4!!)

I did the fog lites as DRL's with a relay that is only on with the eng running. Others are using a oil pressure switch for the eng hours & DRL's. They could assist with this "cheaper" then my way. I used a diode between the alt and power connection, then tapped the alt side (no batt power goes thru the diode and the alt term is cold till the eng is running). Need about a 175 or bigger amp diode (about 40-60$'s) and when I replace mine will use a "reversed" polarity.

Mike: Sorry for the slow reply. Yes. Mine actually started to burn up. A nasty, white, noxiuos smoke started to pour out of the module, indicating nothing positive. When I detached the harness, all stopped. If I hadn't, I suspect it would have burned up, harness and all. If they are not working, it is probably best to diconnect these modules until they can be checked out or replaced. Cheers, Pete.
