and is interested in bombing. I'm not that keen on 24 Valves because I'm still learning about my 12 Valve.

I know you can install a box (i. e. EZ or COMP), but what else?

CMNS PWR took out my rack stop at the grand opening of Black Mountain Diesel, and ever since then this buddy of mine has been jealous of me because I can smoke him out.

He is wanting to know if there is anything we can do to his stock motor to make more smoke.

He's really pounding me for answers since I've told him about the TDR. I'm really trying to get him to become a member, but for now I need suggestions.

I've already ran the idea of injectors and a box by him, is there anything else to consider?

Truck is a 99 Std. Cab Flat bed 3500 4x4 5spd. with 71,XXX miles.

He is already on a second clutch too. Also he has dual 3" pipes with 6" tips:eek: (thing drowns me out just sitting next to him)

So c'mon guys let me hear your ideas.

I like Justins list, but put the gauges in first--he must watch fuel pressure with 24v..... If he just wants smoke get the EZ-Comp. --sounds like they can really over fuel..... IMO... ... R, J. B.

DOH! I was brain dead last night, he is already planning on gauges as a definate.

He's really wanting power and not in "level's" if he does injectors he'll probably jump to 370's, but maybe I can convince him on 275's because he has a heavy right foot!

By the way where can I get the best deal on some 275's for my truck?;)

Yeah I already warned him about the fuel pressure with a 24 Valve's. I told him the 3 gauges he needs are Fuel Pressure, Boost, and EGT.

Told him if he's going to get a box to just go ahead and spend the money on the COMP. Knowing him if he just got the EZ that wouldn't be enough after a while. (after driving it yesterday, I hate to think of it with injectors and a box). There's nothing we can do to just the motor for more smoke is there:confused:

He's really asking me for help on this, and it makes me feel great because this guy is asking me about these things.

Thanks guys

Anything else? What about a Power Max like Briar Hopper use's?

got smoke?,

On the injectors, they are different types used on the 12V's and the 24V's. The 370's that you talk about will fit your 12V but not your friends 24V. For the 24V's the 275 injectors are also know as RV injectors that are used stock in motorhomes and such. The next step up is then DD1,2,3 and there are a couple of levels even higher. To help make the most out of increased injector size your friend will want to also add a boost module. The boost module maybe a stand alone box or maybe intagrated into a fueling box. If a boost module is not added then when the boost gets up to 20psi the computer will start defueling and he will not get the full benifit of the bigger injectors.

DD3's and a VA.

EDIT: With the Comp EGT WILL be a problem in the mid and high levels unless very extensive breathing mods are done. For playing the Comp is nice. For towing and work it is not a good choice.

Ok UPDATE...........

Come in from a nice weekend away and my buddy has suddenly changed trucks on me.

NOW he has a 2002 Quad Cab 3500 5spd 4x4 BONE STOCK:--)

Its got 20K miles on it (repo he saw and had to have).

Now for another question. He say's its a HO, but don't the HO's only come with 6spds? I said its not but he is just so sure its a HO.

Ok LSMITH made a good point. My friend tows a lot with his truck. So what is good for towing as well as playing, but we have to keep the EGT's down for towing.

He's already added a K&N in the box, and he's talking about 4" exhaust.

What about a Power Max? Will it work for playing and towing? Or is it to much?

Sorry to change so sudden but now its almost a whole new ball game.

I tow with a PowerMax 3 and DD3 injectors. The issue becomes a "breathing" problem as LSmith said..... your friend will need to go to a bigger turbo if he adds fuel and expects to work the truck... that holds true for 12 valves and 24 valves alike...

He'll still be able to tow with the Powermax 3 on a lower setting. (how good is his self-control? :D ) And the Powermax 3 has an option where you can get a remote for it, with gauges built into it, the perfect cash-saving option for someone just starting out, who doesn't yet have gauges... .

EZ Edges and VanAakens are good for about 60HP as opposed to the PM3's 120-130 HP . No transmission or turbo upgrades really necessary with those.

370 injectors are for 12 valves only. The 24 valve injectors are different, and are classed in "stages", as in Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, etc.

I think my comp on 1x3 will stomp the crud outta my old VA. Its a timing box boost module and heavy fueler all in one. Whats better than that? In the pursuit of power the absolute best entry, I think ,is to do it right the first time. This is a great combo by all accounts. The Edge Comp with the DD2s are great for towing and leave alot of room for high performance. Add a pdr 14cm or 16cm turbo and you got yourself a real ripper.

I think youll have a hard time convincing him its not a HO. When someone gets there mind set they are hard to sway. Even when they are completely wrong.

I finally broke down and changed my truck for the better. The 275's added two months ago weren't enough. Added a Bullydog Torque plus and 5 inch exhaust. :D :D :D I still can't get the smile off my face! Some times it takes so little to amuse me!

About as good as yours during your "test ride's" Tom  :D

I was waiting for you to chime in Tom. I was going to email you and I sorta got "voted off" the computer at the time.

Anyhow I told him we need to come up and let him go for a ride in your truck!:D

Think we can arrange that when he brings my truck up there for the KDP? :-laf

He mentioned Power Max to me today and the first thing that came to mind was "that was in Tom's truck!"

I'll definately mention it to him, he's planning on several gauges I'll tell him he can save $$ that way.

How hard is one of those Power Max's to install? What type of air intake do you have? He's talking about a 4in exhaust so I guess all that's left is to figure out the air side.

I'm gonna recommend to him a Power Max 3, DD3's (if he plans on doing injectors), AFE Mega Cannon or Scotty II air intake, and a 4" exhaust.

How's that sound?

If the truck is an auto it definetly is not a H. O.

Anything above 60 extra HP on a stock engine the auto transmission will need work done to it to hold the extra HP. Above 60 horsies and he will fry the transmission in short order expecially if he tows.

got smoke,

Sorry, but tell your buddy that 5spd trucks simply are NOT high output engines. He has the standard 235hp/460tq rating (the HO is 245hp/505tq).

If he still doesn't believe you, open the hood and have him look at the engine data plate that is riveted to the timing case for himself. He can read the hp rating himself... the std engine will say 235hp, the HO engine will say 245hp.

The TST Powermax3 is a great box (I have one). He'll realistically gain about 110hp at the rear wheels with this box. Warn him not to tow with it turned up at the higher levels because it will trash his clutch very quickly. Best to just turn it off. As it is he's only going to get about 2yrs of life out of his stock clutch using the box for 'play'.

If he wants to add injectors to a box, forget the stock clutch, it will not hold for a day. He'll have to upgrade.

A Powermax or Edge Comp boxes only take about 45min to an hour to install.

TDR &

he's too cheap to join in. Tell him that until he joins, no more "private" info is avail to him on the "special" upgrades he NEEDS!!!

When he joins he'll get all the "special" assistance he needs (of course - he'll find out that you've been getting all the info that way too ;))... ... .
