Archived Friends 12V Burned Piston & Cracked Head

Any one know what Sleaving a long Block will cost and a Head... This is for a 90 12V 5. 9.....



Any help on where to call for parts, Block, Head or a complete motor "Used" would be appreciated...

... I thought you could bore the block oversize. Of course then you have to change out all the pistons,I guess. Cummins had a direct exchange on bare blocks a few years back. I'd try the "Big C" dealer first... . Doug

Those older cummins are bringing $1000-$1500 on eBay. The newer ones go up to $5k. There are a few cummins motors on there right now.

I haven't had to do anything like that in about 15 years but around here it used to cost about $90. 00 for 1 cylinder so you could make them all standard plus they always got you for cooking and cleaning the block, etc. couldn't tell you about the head.

I would re sleeve the block for the bad cylinder. It's usually around $100 (you have to bore that cylinder, hot tank the block and freeze the sleeve and then beat (or press) them together.



As for the head, you could try to find a used one, reconditioned (like a Jasper), or try to find an aftermarket. I haven't heard of any aftermarket heads for these, but it's worth looking.

My Buddy's (Justin) Uncle is fixing it. I think they are sleeving it. He also has sold the truck after it has been fixed. While he was sitting on the side of the road broken down one of his friends pulled up and offered Justin his 2001 CTD 4X4 with 36,000 miles (Mint Condition otherwise) if he will take over payments. $24,000 I told Justin to buy it!!
