OK, I have a 99, so I'm not the most knowledgeable about the 1st Gen's.

On the way into work, his truck (not sure what year, but it is a 1st gen) just died - no sputtering or anything. The truck was pretty close to empty and this happed when he turned a curve - maybe out of fuel? We put more fuel in and bled the system at the injectors. I loosened the fittings, he cranked it, and I had to loosen the fittings to less than hand tight before any fuel came out - is that normal? I know it's not normal on mine - when they're not "gorilla tight", they leak.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try changing the fuel filter. If the tank was almost empty, crap from the bottom of the tank may have been picked up. Make sure to prime it.

I've never bleed my injectors before, not sure how much should be coming out while the engine is turned over. Check that there is 12 volts to the fuel solenoid.
A friend lost power once, turned out to be the o-ring thats in the top of the fuel heater housing. The heater housing became loose and air entered the fuel system. The fuel heather housing is above the fuel filter.

Thanks guys.

Like I suspected, the injector pump wasn't working. Towed it in to the dealer, and they found a bad solenoid valve in the injection pump. Cost him about $250, but it could've been worse.
