Just thought I'd pass this along, hope it helps someone else. After a short off road trip requiring the use of 4wd it seemed I could not disengage 4wd. Steering was binding during turns even with the transfer case in 2H. I figured the front axle disconnect was stuck. Being 150 miles from home (all interstate) I drove it back to my garage. After removing the axle disconnect and clearly seeing that I was not in 4wd, I put the front end on stands and turned the front wheels by hand. Both wheels turned freely while pointed straight ahead, but when turned at an angle the drivers side wheel was binding up. Long story short, the factory "lubed for life" u-joint was bone dry and the needle bearings destroyed. I've since replaced it with a greasable unit. I called the dealership to get a quote on the job mostly out of morbid curiousity, $430 + tax. Needless to say I bought the ujoint from NAPA for $40 and replaced it myself. The job was quick and easy.

Both sides?

I hope you did both sides. I bought my greasable universals from NAPA also... several years ago.

FYI, it really does not matter if the axle disconnect does seize in the engaged position. The differential will still "differentiate" and it will really be no different than the '03 and up front axle, which has no disconnect (my preference).
