I have tried searching for this information, but the search function is not working properly and brings up totally unrelated posts.

I have a u-joint going bad in my front axle and need the part numbers that are available out there.

I have 52000 miles on the truck and figure I'd rather just stick a good joint in there rather than dealing with the dealer and letting them put another defective joint in.

Thanks,

Blake

Blakers,

What/How did you notice when you axle joints went bad?

Just had mine to the dealer for diagnosis of shudder on acceleration (slow speeds). The checked the rear shaft joints, the front shaft joints, and then claim it is the axle joints. I have a hard time believing this, but the parts are on order... ... .

I'll look on my dealer slip to see if they included the OEM part numbers.

Thanks,

Carl

:{ Edit: On the drive home I came to the conclusion there was no way it was the front axle joints. Stopped a NAPA and picked up a Precision 351. I will take out the rear shaft tomorrow and see which one is heading south. Any pointers would be appreciated. I have never done a two piece shaft removal before.

No part numbers for the front axle joints on the work order... sorry.

I think I will still let them replace those, however, to save myself the trouble for a while.

I changed the oil last night and greased the tie rod ends. I just checked the front joints for sloppiness by hand and the driver's side one is shot. I can probably go a month or so, but I want to put a new one in next week if I can find one. I prefer a better one than OEM.

Take care,

Blake

I had the middle u-joint on my truck replaced today. I was in a bind had had to go load so they got to it real quick.

How quick?

How about $147. 70 for 1 u-joint.

Total ticket was $266. 69 for 1 u-joint installed.

I heard Spicer had a u-joint for the 6 speeds drive axle with the number sp-5-188X.

I stopped at NAPA today and they don't even list a U-joint for the front axle on our trucks. Not in their book or on their computer.

I'm sure they can get it if we know the number though.
