A friend installed new front pads(95 CTD 2x4) and reports of a burning smell,is this normal? If not is this a problem? What can be done to correct the smell?

New pads will smell some while seating (breaking in).

If it keeps up for long have him jack up each tire and see if it spins free, as the calaper may be frozen. It seems when you push them back in the crud inside them can cause them to stick, at least that was Fords problem in the late 80's.

There is coating on the brakes, sometimes, when they are new. This may produce the smell. It will pass. If it doesn't, pull them apart and inspect them for proper operation. You may just have a caliper hanging up.
