I,ve been reading in the service manuel and tried a search but cannot find the answers to my questions. What thickness do new pads start out at and at what thickness are they woreout and need changing? I have 21500 on original pads and they are about 5\16 inch on outside pads. Also do the insides typically wear faster than the outsides. Thanks for any help.

New pads are in the neighborhood of . 420-. 460 inch thick. The inner pads seem to wear much faster than the outer, my right front, inner was worn out at 42,000 and the outer on the same wheel was still about 5/15". bg
---------------OOPS. Just checked the old shoes, the outers are the ones which were worn out. -----------------

Maybe I need to start a new topic, but I was wondering if anyone out there has some ideas on a good line of replacement pads for the brakes. I tow a 24' tag along box trailer that weighs about 7000lbs loaded for about half my mileage. My front pads are pretty well gone here at 30k miles.

Jim, run a search, pads have been hashed out a couple of times in the last few months. I prefer the performance friction pads, I got mine from autozone.

I bought Performance Friction Pads and took them to my brake guy to install. His first comment was how much material was taken off at the usual angle and how little surface area was left for contact to the rotor. He got me some Bendix pads also made of carbon metalic and they had alot more meat on them, oh yeah... they dont squeek which was the main reason for such a large champher on the PFM pads.

carbon met pads are the best to use for towing & high heat situations. I hace been a distributor for perf friction brand in the past but currently sell CarboMet Plus. This has been a superior product for all round use. It has long life with no noise problems and works equally well cold or hot. The origional thickness of a 459 pad that is used in the 94 to 99 diesel 4x4 is approx 5/8 inch on the inner pad and 1/2 inch on the outer. some brands don't use the extra thickness on the inner so you don't get the longer wear on the one that wears first. the rule of thumb is replace the pads when the lining material is down to the thickness of the steel plate it is bonded to. ----sam

Thanks Sam-I called Hawkhead in Florida. Closest dealer to me in Alaska is in Washington. This is you, right? i,ll be calling soon. Thanks for the imfo on the pads.

WOW!!!! Seems like maybe my situation is butt backwards. I had to change my stock pads at 28k and on both sides, the outer pads were significantly more worn than the inners?? I replaced them with the better quality Raybestos pads and they squeel, give off a load of dust and are more than 50% worn after only 8k miles... . No towing either!! Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the friction performance type pads harder on your rotors?

Roger,
Whats the model or PN of those Bendix Pads?

Sam,
CarboMet Plus, where can I check them out? Are they available at local autoparts stores?

-- Just wanted to add, I was reading on a different post only few days ago about pad wear. Many experiece one pad wearing faster that the other. Should be happening on the side with the caliper piston. The floating side does not wear as fast. Do a search and find it. Something about the caliper assembly not sliding the pins correctly. Not sure I stated that right, so go find the post. Anyways people who properly clean the gunk off of and lube these pins properly when doing brake work, experience even pad wear.

Of course there could be lots of reasons, just something I read here, and recently on a different post. --

guys--the part number for the front pads on the 94 to 99 2500 & 3500--4x4 is 459 with some various prefix numbers in all brands except napa. they use a 4 digit number. to my knowledge at this time there is only 2 manufacturers of carbon pads. carbon met pads give very little wear to the rotors because the carbon black in the pads act as a lubricant. I just got word today that we will soon be able to supply a combo pad of carbomet & ceramic. I am told by the manufacturer that they are for extreme use and test on the UPS fleet have given 80000 miles with hardly any wear. A properly wearing set of pads should be wearing the inner pads a little sooner than the outers and the inner pads should be thicker than the outer to compensate for the wear. some brands use the same thickness which means you are getting cheated. these pads are available in some parts stores but a lot of counter people don't know what they are. I am a distributor and can supply them to anyone. I also have the new front pads for the 2000 & 2001 trucks.
