Was driving my father in laws 98 12 valve 4x4 today when i started smelling brakes. Thought it was the guy in front of me until i went to pull away from a stop sign and realized it was mine. Rear brakes are cool, front smoking hot, so it appears only the fronts are staying applied. Loaded it up on the trailer and drug it home. Now the pedal is rock hard. Im thinking bad master cylinder, but I dont know anything about the ABS on these trucks. Truck has 4 wheel ABS, could this be caused by the ABS system? Any ideas thanks PHil

check

check the easy things first. .

1) sticky caliper pins?

2) low brake fluid?

3) bad rubber hoses?

4) stuck caliper piston?

5) pads delaminating?

be sure to tell us what you find.

ultimatly the wheels should spin freely.

at least 1 or 2 revolutions when off the ground.

Will definitely do all the above, but i dont have faith that is is that simple. Brakes were working fine one minute, next minute both front wheels locked up tight. When i say the brakes are stuck on, i dont mean dragging, i mean stuck on. (I guess, i didn't really mention that in my initial post) Pedal went rock hard and I had to get on it so hard to drived it off the road from the stop sign it smoked rear tires. It felt just like it had a line lock on the truck. Fluid level is full, and in all of the other situations above, I could see one side hanging up, but not both.

I dont know, thats why i am so baffled. Hopefully I will get a chance to tear into it tomorow and try to figure it out. The plan so far is to crack the line loose between the master cylinder and the ABS unit. I figure if I relieve the pressure there and the wheels turn free, it must be the master cylinder. If still stuck must be the ABS or something else further down in the system. What do you think?

Rotors?

You may have cracked the rotors?

I have heard of the rotors cracking into pieces.....

You may have also worn the brakes to the point that the pistons have popped out?

Let us know what you find.

Thanks
