55,000 miles is on the truck and the first set of replacement pads have been put on the front. The old pads were shot, but the rotors were nice and true, no turning had to be done. The only thing I don't understand is that the rear pads look brand new, the rotors are shiny and clean so I know they are working, but should'nt the rear pads be worn also.

The caliper has pistons on one side only, the pad on the other side "follows" because the caliper slides on the pins. This causes quicker wear on one side. It's normal. By the way... Welcome!

P. S.

One thing I look for is that the wear rates are the same on both left and right sides of the truck. It's a good indicator of a healthy brake system imo...

I have noticed one of my front wheels (passenger) dusts up alot faster the other, but I have no pulling or other problems with the brakes.

I'm not sure if comments about pads on a '95 apply to your situation with the '01 or not.

The outside pads I took off were worn out and the inside ones looked new. I used Performance Friction pads to replace them. I also replaced the pins the calipers slide on with new ones. The surfaces the calipers slide on are filed smoother than they were originally. When I installed the new pins I used a lot of black silicon grease on the pins and sliding surfaces. So far these pads are wearing evenly between the inside and outside pads. These pads pulled to one side for a while but now they stop without pull. A slow stop with cold brakes requires more pedal pressure than before. However, a hard stop works better than before. My rotors are the originals. Never been cut in 206K miles. I have noticed that I am getting a small amount of pedal vibration now so I think the next brake job will also include new rotors.

Hey guys, I appreciate the replies to my post. I think that I might have you confused though, when I said rear pads, I meant the pads on the rear of the truck as mine is a 2001. 5 that has rear discs, and as others my front wheels stay covered in black brake dust.

All I know is that on an unloaded pickup about 75% of the stopping power is from the front brakes. It would stand to reason that front pads would wear faster than rears. Mt 98 has rear drums so I cant comment on your rear discs. I do know that on all my trucks I go thru 2 or 3 front pad changes to 1 rear shoe change.
