Can you jack it up ?

When I got my truck I happened to have a winch sitting around that needed a home . There was a readily availbale Warn setup that bolted right up and did not disable the airbag. It bolted up and that was that. Since some of those other ones have started showing up, I have had thoughts of getting something just a little bit tougher. When I went to jack my truck up on the Warn enforcer, I watched it start to slowly roll the winch around to a point where i felt it would be broken. That was about the kiss of death for the Warn mount.

My question is, how many of these massive looking aftermarket bumpers can actually be used to jack up the truck ?

Thanks.

Layne from D. O. has stated that his bumper can handle a 15,000lb winch and the shackle mounts are designed to handle the weight of the truck. Warns enforcer bumper does not have shackle mounts so I dont know if they recomend Hi-lifting the bumper. The D. O. bumper, the way it's mounted is beefier than the frame of the truck itself so It should handle it with no problems.

Everytime I've called Layne at D. O. HE has always answered his own phone. He'll tell you what you need to know, give him a call.

Yipes, 2 grand for a bumper? No wonder you dont see anyone with them on trucks. That is insane. I know guys that will kill people for less than that Even $1500 is pushing it for a bare bumper. 2 grand will buy alot of performance parts, not to mention an entire interior resto job on my 71 Cuda plaus new rings and centers for the wheels. Looks like the stock big rig looking bumper is staying on. $2000... get outa town.

does anyone know what putting one of these bumbers on would do to the airbag system? I would think that it would'nt work as advertised with one of these on there. And I would rather have a working airbag with a stock bumber than one of those on there. I think that plastic surgery on my face would cost more than the price of the truck!

I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, the air bag system works by sensors that detect the sudden stop of the vehicle. I don't see how the bumper can affect that process. AS a matter of fact, there are not air bag connections in the factory bumper. At least there wasn't on mine when I took it off.

BTW, Chad, the bumper on my truck has the capability to have a winch mount, I just didn't order it. I figured I could use the 2" receiver hitch on the front to mount a hitch on.

Does change crash parameters...

Aftermarket heavy bumpers should not effect

the air bag BUT they do effect what the

overall vehicle does in a crash. The OEM

bumper fold and crumples to absorb a small

part of the impact. Then the body of the

truck does the same. This reduces the impact

on your body. They are designed that way.

With a much stronger, harder bumper, more

of the impact is transmitted through the

vehicle to you. What you are doing is

changing the parameters of how the

vehicle responds in a crash. In my case it

is a trade off that I am willing to make.

Also, if involved with another vehicle,

the other vehicle likely to suffer more

damage (and possible more injuries to

those parties).

I believe that the heavy duty bumpers WILL alter the characteristics of the airbag deployment (although I will not even try to guess as to what degree). The airbag shock sensor is tripped when certain "vectored" forces are detected. Having a front end crumple zone will allow for a higher speed of inpact before deployment. A rigid front end will produce a higher force at at lower speed, but the occupant will also desire this deployment to "cushion" this force. In otherwords, the same force will set off the airbag but this force is now achieved at lower vehicle speeds.

P. S. I am not very concerned with this alteration, however. If I could afford the additional weight, I would have one as well.
