Anyone know how to install the front cover crankshaft seal into the cover? I got part # 05012290AA from the Dodge house and it came with 3 pieces- the actual seal, some sort of other seal and a metal ring?

Need help ASAP

Haven't done one yet , I bought the kit from Cummins , from what I've read & done on other engs. , some others you can put on from the outside , after removing dampner , on the Cummins & some others you have to take the cover off [ kind of a pain ] , I do not think that mine came with a ring , but my guess is that it is used to keep the seals from getting damaged while your guiding the ft. cover back into position .
Many are able to save the cover gasget & reuse , but if your in a bind have one ready .

SRossi the metal ring is supposed to be for driving the seal in (from the back) but I found it to be a worthless tool.

The other rubber ring think I threw away (lower part of picture, click link below). I got my seal for around $38 from Cummins. Installing it without removing the cover would be very difficult. . . I recommend removing the cover, it's not too terrible of a job although it's probably more involved on a 600 series Cummins (I've only done 2nd Gen trucks). The main part is taking out the fan & shroud.

Well, luckily I already did a cam swap on it, so I figure I'd replace it while the cover is off. . How far in does the seal need to go?

BTW, mine also came with a clear plastic piece instered in the seal. . Im guessing its to help spead the lip while installing it onto the crankshaft

The little metal ring sets the seal to the proper depth in the gear cover.

The small black rubber ring is a dust cover that just gets pushed on after you install the seal.

Also, I have been told to make sure the crank is completely clean and dry

prior to the seal going on. otherwise it will erode and form a groove in the crank.

good luck!

Usually you will get 4 pieces with the seal kit, seal, black ring, metal depth tool, and a clear plastic seal protector. I throw away the black ring (i have no idea what it is for) start the seal with a press and something flat and once it's started, use the metal depth ring from the backside for proper depth. When your putting the cover back on, put the wide end of the seal protector on the INSIDE of the cover. This looks backwards but it's how it works and it pulls out just fine once you have the cover installed and bolted down. I usually drink about six beers during the entire evolution as that seems to be a good finishing point! Good luck.

A little bit cursing a hint of persuasion and it went on. . Is that other little rubber seal suppose to go on the outside of the main seal or inside?

Put some oil on the seal before you put the cover back on , the seal needs some lube , otherwise the dry metal surface will eat the seal .
