I have an air ratchet, but it would surely not have the guts to get those bolts loose, which is why Im trying the leaverage approach.

the belt is on, but its still spinning the motor over. I tried rapping it with a hammer, but no joy there either.

what does the end of the "barring tool" look like. is it a 1/2" wratchet drive or something you can make in the garage or some special tool that really only works if right???

thanks guys

Bob

Just get a friend to hold the belt tight where the engine can't turn or hold the balancer from spinning. Maybe use a c-clamp on the belt to hold tension . I don't think you should put that much pressure on the nut for the vp44 gear or you could just hold that with a breaker bar.

Obvious

Not to insult anyone, but I've been known to overlook the obvious a time or two. If it's a 5-speed (or 6) put it in 5th with the parking brake on.

well... ... ... I replaced the seal the other day & that all went pretty smoothly once I got the damper bolts loose.

when I got the seal out of the timing cover I think I found the problem. I dont think Ive ever seen a seal look like this. I took a few shots of it, hopefully they are small enough to post here. I will give it a try.

looks to me though that the rear is also leaking (trans is covered in oil):( I am going to clean it all off & hope that was just from the front main.

& 2 more of the seal with the "tool" that comes with the new seal. IMO, its more for getting the seal on the shaft w/o damaging it than it is for centering it.
