I am starting to get a small oil leak up front ( a few drops when parked overnight ) I suspect that it is the front crank seal on its way out... ... . anyone replace this themselves and any advice or tips on how to would be appreciated... ... . Peter
Suggest you check and make sure the oil is from the front seal. You signature doesn't indicate if you've killed the kdp. Be nice if the oil is not coming from your gear case. If only the seal needs replacing the kdp should be taken care of while the gear cover is off if this hasn't been done.
Do a search on this topic and you should get the info you're seeking. Replacing the seal has been covered several times in doing the kdp tab fix.
I had seal replaced by a dealer and it only cost me a couple of hundred bucks. That was quite awhile ago and its starting to leak a little again. I was lucky enough to be notified by another member about the KDP. The Chrysler tech knew about the KDP he just didn't know it was a serial killer Dowl Pin. He staked the gear case dowel pin hole with a punch and dumped a little loctite in the hole while he was doing the crank seal.
My experience removing dowels with even a little interference leads me to believe this is a better fix than a tab that requires you to remove the cover anyway.
I hope you just have a seal leaking . If its just a leak take care of the KDP at the same time. It doesn't look like to bad of a job if you have the time.
Just the seal takes a little "finessing" to put into the cover. I like that suggestion that was posted a few days ago. Warm the case up and chill the seal so it slides in easier.
I know one fellow whose seal kept leaking after replacement, turned out the shaft had a groove worn in it. A dealer tech actually figured out to put a Speedy Sleeve and oversized seal on it, problem solved. Took three times though.
The seals are teflon which is about as chemical resistant as you can get. So to those who previously suggested the leaks were caused by using synthetics, I don't think so.
The seal kit comes with a "poser-seal" which is supposed to help keep crap out of the area of the seal. It goes on last. At least thats my understanding. I think I have heard of poser seals in a real axle but really I don't know anymore than that. You may want to research it a little more.
It could also be coming from the gasket between the vacuum pump/power steering pump and the block. I believe that is where my leak is from (KDP has been killed with the jig method). When I bought a new gasket from Cummins, they had 11 in stock. Leads me to think that it is a common problem. :{
