Front Differential Venting

Has anyone experienced gear oil venting from the vent hose attached to the 4X4 engagement mechanism on the right side of the front axle?

The vent exits just behind the air filter on the right fender well and the fluid drops down on the trailing arms.

This has happened once before but only after operating in 4 wheel drive for some time. This time that is not the case nor has the differential been (over) serviced lately.

I did a search on the venting topic and I think I've answered my own question. Probably an outside air temperature issue. I last changed the fluid in January so it's likely to be a temperature issue.

You know i just noticed mine doing that too. Was wondering what that was. But it was a clear like fluid, but yet it leaves a oily marks on the trailing arms?????????

Guys this is an easy one. Climb under the truck and pull the fill plug. I'll bet that you will get almost a pint of extra fluid from the diff. I had this problem when I first got the truck. Since I drained and got the proper amount of fluid in it, I've had no problems. Factory seems to think more is better.

Had the same problem with my '98 V10 when it was new. Problem disappeared after I changed the fluid. I think it was slightly overfilled at the factory.
