well, i believe i found the culprit... Mr. Pitman Arm. when they did the ball joints at the shop they checked the rest of the steering componets while the truck was on the rack and gave it a clean bill of health. so i did a double check at home with truck on the ground and parts were under the full weight of the engine. while turning the wheel on the ground the bad pitman is pretty obvious
about 3/4".

i'll always check suspect parts under normal operating conditions and not totaly rely on what someone checked while truck was not under normal load.
