My guess is no. I'm not sure when the steering upgrade came out but I think it was sometime in 08. I had the new upgrade installed on my 03. Your 06 won't have it if it has not been upgraded.

Thanks. Why I'm asking, my brother has an '09 that the tie rod broke off the drivers side. While trying to listen to his description over the phone, I'm not sure if he is describing it wrong or if the two of ours are different. He e-mailed a pic and I can clearly see its the tie rod, but he's saying the joint is bolted togther and not pressed. I'm guessing he's mistaken.

Did your brother get a recall for the steering linkage? I also have an '09 and I received a recall last year to bring my truck in to the dealer to have the steering inspected, in case I had the recalled parts. Sure enough I got some new steering parts. I think it was a pitman arm and the tie rod end. I think the tie rod end could seperate or something.

If your brother goes to My Dodge: Official Dodge Owners website - Warranty, Vehicle Specs, Service Contracts, Financing, Dealers and enters the last 8 digits of his vin # in the text box at the bottom of the "About My Vehicle" section on the left side any recalls that the truck needs to have performed will come up.

That was done on my 06 and it drove worse after.

Of all the people I have talk to about doing the steering upgrade you are the only one that I have heard has had problems. Most people think their truck really improved. What is your truck doing or how is is worse than before?

I felt no change in my truck after the recall. As far as I can see the pitman arm and the tie rod end were changed and nothing else, the steering design was exactly as it was before. So I expected and felt no change what so ever. I just felt a lot better about towing my trailer knowing the tie rod end that was known to "Fracture" was now gone.

From what I see others talking about with the older trucks the new steering upgrade is a redesign from what was on the truck from the factory. The 2009 in question may have had a recalled tie rod end on it.

Truck drives ok, just notice some shake in column on some bumps. At same time ball joints were also done so maybe everything together made it feel different. I am also very sensitive to any change in feel or sound in vehicles. Maybe just have to break everything in.

He just found out about the recall and had it fixed. Thanks for the info.

I have had the exact same result. XRF ball joints and the new steering gear upgrade installed on my 05 3500. The steering is better than the stock linkage/tie rods/tie rod ends and worn out ball joints, but I still feel shake/wander at random times, usually when hitting bumps. I am still not happy, although it's a bit better...
