How small is the DOWL PIN PROBLEM?

Hello All,

I thought I'd do my front and rear brakes today after work. I got the carbomet pads and also picked up new rotors to do the job right. I removed the center nut and the 4 bolts from the rear of the bearing that bolt it into the knuckle assembly. Rotor wiggled slightly but wouldn't come off. I grabbed a 4 leg puller as per the service manual and lo and behold it popped off or so I thought. The bearing pulled apart with the rear casting still stuck in the knuckle. Now I need a new bearing assembly and no matter what I do, I can't get the remaining rear half to pop out of the knuckle. I am truly baffled and stuck. Anyone please give me some ideas. Have any of you encountered this before?? Also have any ideas where to find a bearing assembly?? Right now I don't dare try to do the other side until I can resolve the drivers side dilema first. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks

Ron

Hello All,

Disassembled the other side and same thing happened. Bearing came apart. Decided to get the BFH and large chisels and wedges and beat on the chisels to wedge apart the rear of the bearing from the knuckle. Definately major rust and corrosion holding these things together. Will wire wheel the ID of the knuckle and use antiseize on the new bearings providing I can find some. If not, I guess I will have to go to the dealer on Monday and "take my reaming like a man" for 2 bearing assemblies. OUCH!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Ron

I did my ball joint Thursday after work and had the Right side come apart. I used a press to put it back together. The outer seal was the only hard part of the operation. In hind sight coming apart is a good thing it allows the bearing to be repacked with grease. I a couple of weeks I have benn thinking about taking the other on apart to pack it also.

Ron---In our shop we use some dummy bolts that are 1 1/2 inch longer than the stock bearing hub bolts. They stick out far enough to pound on the end without causing any problems... Sam
