I have to replace the front main seal on my 96 ram

Do I have to take the timming cover off to do this?

Just wordering about ordering gaskets.

Thanks

Dennis

do you have the kdp done yet? if not you could get the tst kdp kit and do the front seal and the kdp while you are in there. i think it costs something like $50 for everything. has good directions from what i hear.

KDP is already done

Just wondering if I have to remove the timing cover to replace the front main seal?

Dennis

I'd say the cover will have to come off. I don't know of anyway to do it with the cover on. Maybe someone with more experience will chime in.

Here are some #, you probably wont need the gaskets.

12 valve valve cover gaskets. 3930906 (6)FYI (not needed for KDP)

Front Seal 3804899

Timing cover gasket 3918673

KDP Tab 3958017

These are Cummins # about #50. 00 worth if you do the KDP and the gasket. Most of the cover gaskets I have seen have been fine, just a little silicone sealer and you should be in good shape. About $1. 00 for the tab and $25. 00 for the seal.

I checked a while back for timing cover gasket and front main seal from the cummins dealer at St Paul Mn and they said about 100. 00 for just the two of them.

seal

if you have a lot of miles, Cummins provides a sleeve to account for wear on the seal surface, check it out. stormy

You don't have to pull the front cover, but it's alot easier if you do. The seal and front cover gasket retail for $70-75.

Wow, I must have gotten a good buy when I bought that stuff. I know I only payed about $50. 00 at Cummins NW

That's funny the difference in price. Cummins in Indy is $70-75. Dbonzi said they told him $100. I know what I pay for them and I can make good money selling for them for $70. I try not to buy much directly from cummins for that reason.

I did my KDP before Christmas and the dealer didn't carry gaskets for the cover. They just use RTV silcone.

You won't need to remove the cover to do just the crank seal. It will pull out the front and the seal kit I got from Cummins came with an installation sleeve to help get the new seal over the end of the crank.
