Hey Andy,

I sent Mike a PM and he already got back to me. Since I have the '98 all torn apart and am waiting on getting the seal/sleeve/gasket until I can get my paws on a sleeve installer... time's a wasting.

But, that's poor planning on my part. I took the truck apart hoping it wasn't the seal, but it is. Now that it is definitely the seal... Plan B is moving forward. :)

Hi Andy:

Mike sounded like he was VERY busy and wouldn't be able to get around to making a tool for a few weeks.

So, I'll have to wait until he's not busy or see about borrowing a tool somehow. Thanks for putting me in contact with him.

Later,

Matt

On this note, can anyone provide me some quick dumb info...

Part #s for standard crank seal and front cover gasket

and perhaps the size of the fan nut...

My front crank seal has gotten QUITE bad over the past two weeks, when I pulled my front axle apart to do u joints and ball joints, everything was pretty well lubed. KDP was killed already, so I am almost positive it's the crank seal

(You probably have the parts by now... )

These are the parts I used on my '98 12-valve in July '04:

3918673 - gasket $27. 68

3804899 - seal $32. 00

I'm still not used to paying full retail for Cummins parts...

Matt, you'd be proud... Pulled the fan, shroud, damper, etc etc, all to go to the bottom of the cover and realize that the bolts were all loose, as were the front oil pan bolts!

Oh well, oil leak fixed...

Gasket

Matt, be sure to give the parts man your engine CPL number. I changed mine two weeks ago and went in and asked for the gasket for 98 12v and I got one that would not fit. He ordered one by my engine number and it fit perfect. Lost a day waiting for new part by not knowing the differance.

Ron:

You make a good point. It's always best to order based on the engine serial number and CPL. The gasket I got last time fit without a problem...

I went to the Cummins parts counter last night and left with a seal/sleeve kit, gasket...

Tonight I was going to tear into it, but figured I'd run the engine for a bit to really get a handle on where the leak was. Well, the front main seal was dry after running it for 5-8 minutes or so with no harmonic balancer (don't do this at home for extended periods). BUT, I found a pretty nasty little leak that looks like it is coming from in between the gearcase and the engine block.

Not cool. So now, I have to pull the radiator, gearcase cover, CAMSHAFT, and then the gearcase to change out that gasket. She leaks pretty good (1 good drip on the concrete every 3 or 4 seconds at idle)... so I'm going to have to dig into it. At least I'll be able to use my recently purchased seal/sleeve and gasket.

By the way, I got the sleeve installer from Mike Ames... man, that thing is a beautiful piece of work I tell ya. I didn't test fit it yet, but it looks SWEET.

Matt - down but not out. :D
