front seal problems again. i'm currently changing my leaking front seal(while doing the head), and we installed an front sleeve/ seal kit. the sleeve went on well, but my buddies broke the new seal trying to install it, and are saying that it was too small.

i got the seal from my local case/ih dealership. (local dodge dealer wanted $160 no thanks). are they giving me the right part number or should i get the seal from a parts house. i also called the case-ih dealership, and spoke to a mechanic, he said that the small clear ring in the center of the seal is to stay on, (my buddies are disagreeing), and that the seal "should just slip on over the sleeve". are we missing some detail. does anyone have the correct part number?

thanx.

The seal kit should be about $35 or so at Dodge. Less than that at Cummins. The Cummins part number I have is CM 3804899. That number is a few years old so it may have been replaced by a later number. The seal installs just like it comes out of the box. Use the plastic installer to put it on. Make sure that the nose of the crank is clean and dry or the seal WILL leak. Put a little blue locktite on the outside of it to seal it into the gear case cover.

Joe,

we made sure crank is clean, and are using the plastic ring. i was told by a mechanic that the sleeve kit, can be used with the ring, but the seal still will not even think about going in the timing cover correctly. it makes me think that the plastic ring is to be used without a sleeve installed?

are we doing something wrong, or is it a wrong seal?

thanx

If you are talking about a black plastic ring the same size as the seal, it's a dust shield. It goes on the outside to protect the seal from dust. You can leave it out if you want. It really is for dusty places like farms.

joe,

i explained to the ones that that black ring is a dust shield, but they decided to not install it. we got the seal in, turns out the entire time the service manual i have said to lossen the front cover and install seal, allowing it to center itself, and position the front cover correctly,(that was the problem both the first time & this time) hopefully won't leak this time.

thanx
