I was told by the dealership where I bought my HEMI last year that those bars you guys are talking about are for support and they are supposed to curve up like that on the sides in the hip and thigh region.
It was not only uncomfortable to me but it was leaving really bad wear marks in the shape of the bars in the seat after only about 5000 miles on the truck. Even with the wear marks Dodge would'nt do anything about it.
I took the truck to a friend who owns a upolstry shop (custom interiors and such) and he told me no problem. I picked the truck up the next morning and it felt like a totally different seat although it looked the same and the wear marks were gone also.
I asked him what he had done and he told me that he had replaced the insert (the piece of material that you actually sit on). He told me that he added padding to the bottom and made some other adjustments in the seat. I did'nt ask what other adjustments because I really did'nt care because the seat was so comfortable.
I put another 5000 miles on it before trading it in on the new CTD and never had another uncomfortable minute in it.
This truck is the same as the 2003 was and it will be going in for the same fix. It was $80 bucks last time but well worth it.
When I called him the other day to set up a date to take it in he commented that he had done the same thing for another new Dodge truck owner.
I've been thinking it was just my big ass that was the problem.
Funny stuff, yet another skinny white boy here and I have had no problems so far. I took several almost 8 hour drives and felt ok, bad back and all. I love those seat heaters, hardly even need any heat with them on.
I have noticed that the leather seats in my 03 seem to be a couple of inches shorter in the seat cushion than in my 01 with the premium cloth seats. After a long trip I really notice it on my thighs, kind of like sitting on a bench.
Is your seats leather? Mine are, and I have no problem with them as far as comfort! I just returned from a 500 mile trip in 6 hrs 15 minutes, and had no problems with fatigue, but I do adjust the seat occasionaly while I drive, including the lumbar pad.
My truck is the SLT with the premium cloth. I love this truck otherwise..... but my butt is cracking up under the pressure.
I checked out an older Dodge SLT I think it was a 2000 model at my local dealer and the seats are very different than my 03. I noticed they were much bigger overall and the support rails were clear out towards the edges of the seat instead of directly underneath you like the newer ones are. The newer seats look like a more supportive design as far as holding you in the seat better. But those dang bars are to close to the butt.
It seems a lot of people fit one brand or anothers seats, and can stand the others. I've had chevys in the past till I got my 1st CTD. I liked both just fine. In 2000' my buddy bought a new Ford. Took a 300 mile trip and could not walk at the end. Have tried other Fords and can't stand the seats in any of them. F350's 250's 150's even one guy at work has a ranger. that is the worst of all. 10 blocks down to the local greasey spoon cafe is more than I can stand. Not sure why this is but I hear a lot of mixed opinions from all side. Just confusing to me.
I am 6'3 and 210 lbs and I have the same issues with the bars. They are very uncomfortable but I have not mentioned it to the dealer. I have the premium cloth and have not had any other major issues to date. (9k on truck)
Ok, I'll break the bank. I'm 5'4 and 270 lbs and I feel those bars every time I drive the truck and it's worse over a long drive. The short drive is ok and they also didn't seem to become a problem till after I put 5k or so on the truck
I'd like to know exactly what the upholster did in TX. I'd like to find one here in NJ to do the same thing.
FYI, DC only tests the seat to 285 lbs in case you wanted to know.
Again, I thought it was just my boney butt (5-11, 170). I feel the bar and it just doesnt feel like there is much padding. I was thinking of adding a sheep skin cover or something similar.
How does he extra padding work with the heated seats?
Well I am glad I am not the only one thats notices this.
I am quite disappointed though that my dealer and Dodge won't step up to the plate on this issue and offer a fix. I was literally told that if an area rep says my seat is normal then that is the decision I am supposed to live with. I was not happy with this statement whatsoever. Just a bit disappointing on a brand new vehicle that you really like and then the manufacturer leaves you hanging like they could care less. I guess I am just curious what this Warranty is for and so called customer satisfaction??? I really wonder what will happen if something expensive breaks will they treat me the same???? Makes me think of going back to Ford... I hate to say it... ... But any little problem I had my Ford dealer took care of me 100%. I am sure it all comes down to if your dealer is a good one or not... because a good one will work in your favor and bend overbackwards to help. My Dodge dealer kinda acts like I am not important now that they have my money.
You should be able to take it to any good upholster and get it done. If I remember it right he used a more dense padding on the sides (not thicker) and he added more padding to the center section between the bars (thicker and softer) and it was great after that.
He also rebuilt and recovered the seats in my 17 year old sons 97 Ram. They feel better than original even though they look completely factory.
The way I understand it this is pretty simple stuff for these guys and its not to expensive. I do agree with some of the other post though, I think Dodge should fix it at their cost.
Having said that, my 2nd 3rd gen is going in to be redone at my expense at 9:00am tomorrow.
I've had a '98 1500, an '02 1500, and now the '03 2500... . I'm 5'6" and weigh 260..... the seats in all 3 trucks were very comfortable... all 3 were SLT w/ premium cloth.....
I'm new, just subscribed last week. I have a 03 3500 qc srw slt, wife and I agree the seats are not comfy for a long trip. Drove from milwaukee to La Crosse Wi, about 4 hours, thats as long as I think I could stand it.
