I may do rotors if it isnt cost prohibitive.

The ball joints were checked out less than 5K miles ago and given a good bill of health. Even with 120K miles on em. Adding my own zerks payed for themselves many X's over. :D The upper joints are nearly impossible to get to, but some grease is better than none. :-laf

[Never mind this post. I'm wrong; see SSL's post and mine, below. ]

'98 4x4, the hub and rotor is a single unit. If you replace either, t'other comes with it. They are not intended to be disassembled for service.

Only thing I can suggest might be to thoroughly degrease the new rotors then use an orbital sander with suitable Al-O2 sand paper to scuff up the rotor surfaces a little. Then clean them again. Then install and clean yet again. You can't try hard enough to get all the grease off the brakes.

Are you sure? I can find the parts seperated, but not as a unit.

Dam, I wish I could find the shop manual. #@$%!

On my 98 they are seperate. You may think they are one because it's so hard to press the studs out but they aren't. I had to use a 30 ton shop press to get them out. No amount of penetrant, beating, u-joint press, etc would budge them. They popped like a gun going off when they finally let loose. The wheels studs are pressed into the rotor and hub.

Thanks Steve. I somehow missed your post. :D

Ah. This may be why the rotor and hub are sold as a unit. I had been lead to believe they were a single unit. But now that I check my SM, I find I've been mislead, and wrong. (Damn, that's the second time this year! 2009 does not bode well for me. )

This is what I've been seeing.

That's why I asked when you said it's one piece. :D

Thank God!

I took it apart today to give it some Kroil.

When the wheel was off I saw a very shiney spot on the disc brake dust shield.

Sears put them on a little off center.:cool:

I lubed everything up and put it back together and no noise!!!
