I need to replace front wheel u joints and ball joints, I've got the axle nut and 4 bearing bolts out, but the bearing is frozen into the carrier any suggestions for removal?

Use a good penetrating oil, Let it sit for awhile and put the 4 bolts back in about 1/2 way

and get a 2-3 ft bar and TAP on the bolts to loosen them up. Dont pound too hard or you will toast the bearing seals. The inside back surface is in about an inch and once it starts to move will come out pretty easy. Make sure you use sandpaper and scrub all surfaces well to get it shining,or it wont seat back right.

If you need a new hub for the 99 Advance auto has em for under 200 bucks. Dealer is over double that, and i think napa has lifetime replacement for about 50 bucks more.

I used the advance auto ones and they were nice, part#515012 federal mogul makes em and they have timkin bearings.

Good luck Dirk

When I was doing that job, I modified the new bearing with a grease fitting, by using the ABS sensor bolt. My right side bearing ( original)now has 250,000 miles on it, the left is the newbie at 160,000 mile. The original ( left) went only 100,000. Isn't a little grease a gret thing, I grease the bearing every time I have the rotors off, so not to often.

If you're interested in doing this, send a pm and I'll explain.

good luck

Well I figured the whole thing out. I undid the ball joints and tie rod, dropped the whole thing down as far as I could, and put a torch to the upper ball joint. Once the ball joint shaft was cut the whole carrier/rotor assembly came out pretty easy. Then I used a block of wood to support one of the brake caliper ears and held up on the tie rod arm so it was off the floor and a couple well placed hits with a big hammer and it popped apart.

I've been having some ABS related problems lately so I may be replacing the bearing. I dont quite understand the way it works inside the bearings yet so I'm not sure if the bearing part needs replacement or the wire part. I can describe the problem maybe someone can point me in the right direction. When I'm stopping and I get down to about 5 mph the ABS kicks in and I am left with very little or no braking temporarily. So I think one of the sensors is losing signal at slow speed the computer thinks I have a locked up wheel and engages the ABS. Any ideas? RDHamill you have a PM.

Refer to the following post. Also, Quad4x4 has the hub assembly, and NAPA or the other major parts suppliers can't get it. I have just replaced both of my sensors due to the dust shield wearing/melting the cable into the wires.

There is a procedure listed for using the power steering to remove the hub. I used an air hammer on the hub bolts to remove mine, after pulling the assembly apart with a puller.

Good luck,

Jeff

I don't know if the 99's are the same set up as '01, but I would recommend putting anti-seize on everything before putting it back together just to make it easier next time. Mine was a pain, due to the corrosion. Just a suggestion. Good luck! :)
