I have two questions about the front wheel bearings and the input shaft size. I know that some year models have the front bearings that are dealer only as far as repacking, how can I tell if I have those bearings. I'm wanting to get this done pretty soon and I have always done it myself. If I have the dealer only bearings is it possible to change my front hubs with another year model so I can do it myself in the future. On the input shaft I saw a post that said that the 1 1/4 shaft size was changed to the 1 3/8 size starting in 2000. How can I find out if I have the 1 3/8. My truck is a 2000 year model and was built in Dec. 1999. Thanks in advance for the help

SHobbs,

Do you have a 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? If you have the 4x4 then you certainly have the sealed cartridge bearings that are not servicable. If you have the two wheel drive then you might be able to repack the bearings yourself - not sure. I know my early 98 2wd has the standard bearing configuration that I can repack myself.

My early 01' 2wd has the idiot proof, non maintainable, throw away, environmentally non-friendly, sealed for your protection so we can take your money again later, dealer part only front wheel bearings. 68k and one of them is making noise.   for the record I think non-servicable bearings are a bad idea.

Just my $. 02

P. S. I really needed to vent on that one.

Front Wheel bearings '95 4x4 3500

During an axle joint rebuild (at 80,000 mi) we discovered that the front wheel bearings are bad.

The dealer wants $270 per side, for the whole bearing/hub assy.

We finally found the bearing cartridge only, for $150 per side, which seems like it's still too high. Has anyone found a good place to get that dual-bearing pack for a better price?

Your dealer can do a little better, i got mine for 230 a side just ask them. these bearings are a pain to replace. Luck was on my side had 130000 before i had to replace mine.
