2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Frozen PS Fluid causing horrible GROANING noise ??

The last few mornings the temps here have ranged from -5 to 5F degrees outside. When I start my truck (outside at work NOT plugged in) there is a horrible groaning sound coming from the PS pump. The truck is alot harder to turn as well.

I'm guessing the PS fluid is thicking up due to the Low Temperatures outside.

I've searched the forums and others have suggested using Valvoline Semi-Synthetic PS fluid with good results.

What is the Freeze Point for Power Steering fluid ??

I don't belive there is a freeze point for P/S fluid. Perhaps mixing in a bit of synthetic ATF would thin it out a bit, anyone else?

Definately use the Valvoline fluid - it will fix it for a few years. You can just use a turkey baster to suck the fluid out of the reservoir. Fill it with the Valvoline, turn your wheel left and right to mix the fluid up, then suck it out again. I do it 3 or 4 times and then it's good to go for a few years. I need to do mine right now too.

Steve and all - - - Did this yesterday - - only emptied twice but will do it again tonight - - - seem to have solved the problem - - - didn't do anything to the screen/check valve. Good tip for a fix AGAIN !
