What is your preference when it comes to fuel additive. I have ran out and need to buy another gal.

I am fairly new to the site and have not read any threads concerning this subject except for, one thread Bushwacker stated a good additive is needed this time of year but he did not give any examples. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

*PLEASE* try the excellent SEARCH feature on this board, this VERY tired subject has been THOROUGHLY covered - about 4 times in the last week alone...

PLEASE lets not beat it to death all over AGAIN!

HERE, if this works, I did a search FOR you - click on the pointer for a LOOOOOOooooong list of related threads...

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/search.php?searchid=320367

Don't mean to appear cranky, but sometimes the repititious questions from new users who post before reading the board FAQ, or at least TRYING the search feature to uncover previous threads on the same identical subject gets sorta old... Meanwhile, welcome to an excellent resource for your truck's operation and maintenance.

OH - and for what it's worth, the most popular additives among members here seem to be Power Service Fuel Supplement (cold climate formula), Power service Diesel Kleen (warm climate), available at Walmart stores - or Stanadyne. Good luck.

moverton..... i have used diesel kleen by power service and it seems to work good in my truck..... there are several good additives out there... and if you have questions ask them... . there is alot of help from the people in the "1ST GEN" site... i'v been around alittle over a year and have gotten alot of help... .

Gary,

I apologize if I wasted your time. I did try to search for "fuel additive" and looked at 10-15 of the threads with no success. I figured it wouldn't be to much of a pain to say "I like brand xyz". I will try not to ask any more "repetive questions", maybe I will not get blasted by someone.

Hey, Gary!

Edit - Me running my mouth when I should just keep quiet. I tried to take up for a new member, but got shot down for it. I will promise to be nice..... until it's time to not be nice.

Edit - Almost forgot! MOverton, welcome aboard!! Feel free to ask whatever you want in the 1st Gen Forum. I have used Power Service myself in both of my trucks since 94. I get it at WalMart or Tractor Supply Co.

Well say guys,

whats the best OIL to use in my truck?

Is synthetic better than dino oils, why?

What brand tires are best?

is a manual transmission better than an automatic?

Lets beat all THOSE up again for a while too...

OH, and *I* drove a '91 Dodge for 11 years before I got the '02 - thus my interest in the earlier stuff - and when I travel into a new board or group, I normally investigate what board resources and archives are available BEFORE asking questions that might have already been answered, MANY times already - JUST as this board's archives list MANY threads answering about numerous fuel additives, what they do and where to get them...

BUT, if ya really LIKE getting buried in old stuff all over again, you can work on the 4 I provided up above... OR, if ya don't like THIS post, just "skip on over it"...

Guys, let's keep the focus on the help a member needs... . heck, even I still ask repetitive questions from time to time myself...

To be strictly accurate and fair, Gary is correct, we should make as much use of the search function(s) as possible but it does happen from time to time that you need to know the correct question (search criteria) to ask too...

OH... and inviting another member to meet half way on state border is a full 10 RWHP penalty... ;) ,,,,not to mention the 10 male hairies that goes with it... not to mention a contravention of the site guidelines, and the chapter of "bomb thy neighbours truck" in Our Lady Of Acceleration's bible... ;):D

Besides, Gary is just uncommonly blunt, I'm sure No insult was intended.

MOverton, don't be shy in here... we're all pretty well nuts to start with... now, additives...

Some good one's have been mentioned but maybe you should be asking something a little more to the point... . in an indirect way... .

What should an additive do for my application/needs???

Well, our pumps are lubricated AND cooled SOLELY by fuel... . no oil, no other sources of lube or cooling are used, or rather, available.

(In no particular order, are my thoughts on additives ..... )

This means that under normal conditions our pumps need lubrication, in my opinion, beyond the lube properties of the fuel itself.

So, "lubricity" is a necessary feature to any additive we use.

Next, depending on climate you'll need some control over fuel gelling or thickening... so you want some "anti-gel" ability as needed.

The next item is detergent properties... . remember this WILL NOT make up for a dirty fuel filter or poor service intervals and bad fuel. The detergent will help keep your entire injection system clean, or at least cleaner.....

Since injection systems will, over time, begin to actually wear out due to high pressure fuel passing through them all the time you don't need deposits making things worse, or you'll end up with bad mileage, low power, lots of smoke and poor engine performance just to name a few things.

The next item is cetane rating(s). In our case cetane is the diesel version of octane (for gas).

If you are very very lucky you'll have fuel that is a true "premium" fuel. This is one of th lengthy topics that Gary may have been referring to. There is a difference between advertising premium and "TRUE" premium which I won't go into here.

Basically the higher the cetane rating of the fuel the better the entire system/truck will perform and run. Now, the cetane ratings on fuel can vary a huge amount from North to South, and East to West.

It's not uncommon to find cetane ratings of 42, 45, 46/7 ... . some as low as 40. This is made worse in winter when we get "winterized" fuel. It is really poor quality as reflected in idle speed/quality/smoke/mileage/general performance... .

Here are my recorded stats... . on winter fuel my mileage drops by approx. 1. 5 - 2. 25mpg, my idle drops about 75 - 80RPM and the idle quality is noticably poorer, I have more exhaust smoke as well.

All of this can be helped to one degree or another by using a cetane improver. Some will claim the cetane improvement will be (for example) between 5 - 8 points. Other's will claim 8 - 10 points and so forth.

There are other properties you will make use of in additives but those are the highlights... .

I have found that Stanadyne PF makes a noticable difference in my truck, particularly in winter like now. I loose idle speed due to fuel grade but gain most or all of it back with the use of cetane improvers like Stanadyne. They have other products that do other jobs or mulitiple roles as well (as noted above)

Howes I find is really more aimed at lubricity and detergent action... at least that's been my opinion when comparing it's use to Stanadyne PF. (I can get Howes for free and choose not to use it unless I'm stuck with no additive at all.

The other guys have mentioned other company additives for you to check out. Pick one and try it for a couple full tanks of fuel. Usually I suggest to a "first timer" to double up the dosage on the "normal" instructions then go to "as directed" on the second tank.

You should find some differences in idle, smoke, startup, power, etc... . pay close attention cause it can be subtle at times... .

Well, my meds have worn off and I'm going to stop now..... :D:D:D

MOverton... welcome aboard and no need to appologize to me...

I use a brand that the local truck supply store sells around here ... . PFFP. I use the lubricity formula in the spring/summer/fall and the anti gel in the winter.

I would suggest picking one that you can easily find, so you will always have it available when you fill up.

Tugger... . LOL... now ya gotta make another run up to GL so he can get those 10 ponies back into your truck... . :-laf

Everyone, thank you for the information. I will check around and find one of the brand mentioned sold in my local area. Also, thank you for the defense of my repetive question. Next time a will do a lengthier search before posting my question. Sorry for any disagreement that I caused. Have a great day.

I have been using Meaner Cleaner for about 6 mos. Yesterday when I changed the fuel filter, I noticed the flat O ring on the top of the filter, 98. 5, 24 V version, was swollen and almost fell out when I took it from the housing. I hadn't noticed this before and I have changed every filter since new and have 116,000 on it now. I don't think I will continue to use this cleaner. I also didn't notice any fuel mileage improvement which was my reason for using it.

MOverton,

I use Stanadyne or Power Services, welcome to the forum.

The brand that's available when you blow out your old tire and are a long way from civilization. :--)

No

Happy Rammin to both of you,

I have always been told that there is no stupid question, if you don't know something, ask away, you might not get the answer you like but usually in the first gen forum you will get an answer.
