Whats a good brand of fuel additive to use for cleaning injectors etc. Walmart sells some at a decent price but I know nothing about the brand. ( its in a white plastic bottle )

Try a search and you will get a ton of results on this topic. I think issue #29 also had a write up on additives.

To answer your question:

Power Service (the kind at Walmart) is the number one additive based on sales numbers alone. It is a good additive, IMO, but be careful as they make a few different additives and I don't remember what color bottle is the best. It may be white.

On this forum, Stanadyne seems to be the most widely used. It is as excellent additive IMO, and it is approved my many major engine MFG's, but not Cummins. Prolly casue they make their offer their own, which is OK I guess but overpriced IMO.

LE DCI+ is also a top notch additive. I have gone through many bottles of it, but it isn't as availble as others.

Howes Meaner Power Cleaner has been talked up lately and I am trying to locate some locally to give it a try myself.

You are on the right track. An additive should always be used, IMO, regardless of the time of year.

I've tried the Howes (I get it free) and I must say that it is not a good as Stanadyne PF. I find the the latter to improve the quality of engine idle, and make a serious difference in the amount of smoke. (LESS) I can't say I've really seen serious diff. in mileage although it does seem to help a bit. IMO.

I have used a Diesel fuel additive at every fillup since 3k mi. in my 24v (now 58k). I started out using Red Line 85+ (a. k. a. Diesel Fuel Concentrate), and switched to Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate (after I became a "dealer"), followed by Stanadyne Performance Formula. Truthfully, I don't think any one of these performs better than the other however, I do believe all three were doing their job as I have not experienced many of the fuel related problems (however remote) others have on this BB. In addition, removal (and subsequent examination) of injectors in my Ram bear this out. Suffice it to say I'm still looking for the Holy Grail of Diesel fuel additives... maybe I've already been using it.

BTW, I have never experienced a (known) mileage gain from one additive to the other. I would hazard a guess that those who do, do not use a Diesel fuel additive at every fillup, therby skewing the perceived results.

Use it

I put it in my tank before I drove off the lot with my new truck. Additive preferences are like shocks.

I've tried Redline 85+, LE DCI+, Howes Diesel Treat, and now am using Howes Meaner Power Cleaner, which I like the best of all of them. My engine purrs like a kitten, and that tells me I'm getting pump lubrication which is the reason I use it... ... every fill up.

I used Power Service additive in my truck from day one, i use it in all my farm vehicles and just naturally used it in the truck when i brought it home.

at 31,3XX miles I changed my stock injectors and they were a mess. I dont know how the fuel could find its way out, what was left of those holes. I would like to see the top side of my combustion chambers too. I bet they arent so spanking clean anymore.

I am now using Howes, which I buy from Quick trip, where I have bought nearly all of the 1634 gallons of fuel I have run through it.

I just took a 4k mile trip and used LE DCI+ and Stanadyne PF. I think the Stanadyne was an RCH better for mpg. I'm mixing them now and checking mpg. Craig

RCH :D :D LMAO Have not heard that in a long time.

I have used stanadyne in my truck since I got it last summer. Recently was given a bottle of DCI+ to try and compare. With the promise that I would give a report. So here it is.

Basically switched from the stanadyne to DCI+ for 3 tanks, then drove the stanadyne for 3 tanks, and then drove without for 3 tanks.

I did not notice any real difference between the two brands. If there are RCH differences I cant see them. Too fine for me. After running with 3 tanks of no additive I think the truck is slightly noisier, by about a RCH ( can help myself ). Cant really tell sitting at idle, but doing down the freeway at 1800 rpm the truck was pretty quiet in the cab. Here is where I think I can observe a little more noise.

DCI+ is 4 tanks per bottle ( 4 - 30gal fillups ) versus Stanadyne is 2 tanks per bottle. So depending on your costs, DCI can be a better deal.

Overall I think I will stick with the stanadyne due to availability. Less that $4 a bottle mail order from DIS, if you buy a 12 pack. I also have been mixing it at 1 bottle for 3 tanks instead of 2. Very affordable per tank and its a once a year purchase and I got all I need.

Howes Meaner Power Kleaner

I used howes mpk for three tanks and saw a noticeable decrease in mpg.

19. 5 no additive on hiway and 18 mix hwy and city

16 with howes city and hiway, 15 half c&h and half towing 3k-6k.

switched to Power Service Power Kleen (gray bottle) and saw 18mpg with city and hwy for two tanks, last tank was half city and hwy and half towing 3k boat on hiway got 15. 3mpg.

I only have 6000 miles on my pick-up. If this towing mpg thing does not improve over the next 10k miles I will be selling a nice 2001 Dodge. Anyone got a nice 12valve 5speed they want to trade?

I am hearing a lot about the Howes Meaner Kleaner... Not as good as they boast? I like the idea of better economy but I want it more for the longevity of the fuel system.

Also I give as well..... What is RCH?
