Fuel Additive

I'm looking for some advice on a fuel additive. I don't know what I should be looking for other than consistency of fuel mileage. I think my last tank was a little "off". Any help would be appreciated.

Fuel Additives

I have been using the Red Line Diesel additive and have not had any negative effects. The only difference that I can say that I notice is a smoother idle. I was unable to find the 85+ the last time that I purchased and bought a bottle of the Catylyst. They seem about the same to me.



I hope that others chime in here as I am interested in the input. I did try to find a local supply of the Performance Formula by Stanadyne with no luck. The Red Line is a bit less difficult to find in this area. I also had a one pump shop tell me that it is a waste of money to use additives. I don't believe that he has had any experience with the VP pump and this may be the reason for his opinion. What a Country!! Eh?



As for me I think I will continue to use additives primarily for the lubrication factor. So here goes everyone, Which fuel additive is the "best"?

I have tried a few different brands of additives (Howes MPC, Stanadyne, and LE DCI +).



Although I think they are all good products, I have settled on LE's DCI+. They all seem to help mileage about the same (marginal), but the truck seems to idle a little smoother (also marginal) and quiter on the LE than the others.



I think fuel additives are a very subjective topic. I just decided to pick one and stay with it.

I use Power Service w/cetane boost. I have no comparisons for you since that's all I've tried. Seems to work well with the weather around here and keeps my average mileage at 19-20 even on winter blend.

I could probably get by without it, especially this winter. But it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling and doesn't cost much.

I use Standyne Performance formula in my truck, Cummins approved it so that is what I use. My father also uses it exclusively in his 91. 5 cummins and he has accumulated 260K. without a fuel induced problem yet.

I was looking for a good additive and started asking the truckers what they use and hands down it was Lucas oil,have tried different ones because they were cheaper but none have helped the mileage and performance like Lucas oil. Most everyone I talked to said its the best protection for injection pump money can buy.

I cant stick up for any one particular brand but I can say that IMHO a guy should always use them , I have been using Stanidyne or powerservice from day one and when I changed injectors out at 20K the stock ones were free of carbon , I was impressed and sold right there and this confirmed my original thoughts on additives, I use them for the following reasons

1) lubricity and cooling of the vp-44

2) keeping total fuel system clean

3) less carbon in the all mighty CUMMINS

4) added centane for increased fuel mpg( this initself I think will pay for the product)

5) anti-gel, I buy straight #2 year round if I can

I use the Amsoil Diesel Fuel Additive Concentrate in conjunction with their Cetane Boost Diesel Additive and have been happy with the results. It was the only product I found that increased my mileage enough for me to take notice. I buy it in the 5 gallon Jugs to cut the cost down some. (Remember 2 trucks )

Not trying to start another Amsoil thread here and I am not a dealer. Just happy with this product.

I remember the Duralt used to use that in my Harley. Right now I use Diesel Fuel Additive Concentrate and Cetane Boost Diesel Additive. I would like to find more info on the Lucas. I remember reading about it on Freds TDI site. I read somewhere where Amsoils is produced by Stanadyne to Amsoils specs.

I've been using Lucas for the last 20,000 miles since I bought my truck. Also on the advice of a local trucking outfit and some big rig drivers. Truck runs great smooth idle and all that good stuff. I will continue using it so long as I'm getting the good results I have been. Ken

I started out using Red Line 85+ at 3k mi. at every fillup in my Ram... it worked well. I later switched to Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate also using it at every fillup... it also worked well. After I finished the case of Amsoil, I switched to Stanadyne Performance Formula which I purchased from D. I. S. (Diesel Injection Service). www.dieselpage.com



In all cases, the products worked well (knock on wood, I'm still on my OE '98. 5 VP44) and I received the best pricing as I always purchased these products by the case.



PS x-ring (BTW, I like your screen name), there used to be a difference between Red Line 85+ and Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst however, 3-5 years ago they combined formulations (simply put) although, they still have it labeled under BOTH names (some customers still adamantly request one over the other). Years ago, the 85+ was formulated with a bias towards performance whereas the Diesel Fuel Catalyst was formulated more for smoke control.

I like the lucas also, you can find them in any big truck stop. I notice the gal jugs of the injection cleaner are harder to find, but definitely cheaper.

I tried the cummins injection cleaner after not using any additive for a while after reading an article in tdr about it. I noticed the difference. It definitely worked.

I've been using Amsoil and others for an antigetl. Amsoil, (and power service) are more expensive than others for the antigel part of it, and I don't think they are any better than a cheaper antigel (like howes) I usually use Howes unless I get to the Peterbilt dealer, and they have some stuff (works just as good) for $3. 05 for 700 gal, but I forget the brand. I've used it in the dodge, but usually use it in the big truck. . .

I've been using the Power service diesel kleen. I do notice it's a bit more peppy. Less smoke too. I thought I was going nuts, so I gave my Dad a quart, along with my brother. They said they noticed a difference too.

If you got one of the 24 valvers, I'd get something that lubes the pump.
