I thought I heard somewhere that the injection pumps are coated on the inside with teflon and that the fuel conditioners would harm the teflon?

yep, especially when we have to run number 1 in the winter. The additives bring the lubricity as well as the performance up.

I doubt this. Remember, Teflon is self-lubricating because every time you apply friction to it a thin layer shears off. It wears out VERY fast, and won't hold a tolerance. I say this because I have experience building a piston/cylinder arrangement where the piston was solid Teflon and the cylinder was aluminum. The wear rate would be unacceptable in a 1600 bar injector pump.

Yeah, it was probably just some B. S. somebody was spouting. So if there is no coating on the inside. I don't see why an additive would be harmful to the injection pump. Maybe a question for Bosch since they make them.

Thanks for the info guys. I want to use the valvoline, but all the distributirs out here only carry the Gas version. Might need to get it from the company. I can get Diesel Kleen however! Might giv ti a go!

Try the closest Cummins service center! They should carry it, or be able to order it for you.

Might try any truck stops in your area - they pretty much always carry that sort of stuff for the big rigs... WalMart carries the Diesel Kleen and Diesel fuel supplement from Power Service...

I am a new (First Time) diesel owner and I have 15,000 miles on my 03. I have never used any additives... . except in the winter time. I used some anti-gel formula since it often goes below zero in Chicago. Is this a bad thing? Any suggestions on what I should be using... . if anything at all?

There are no cummins places around me... closest one is 66 miles away. Im not going that far... is there anywhere i can order the additives online?

For us guys that must contend with sub zero winters, additives are a must and reccmended.
Amen brother. All these CA and FL owners braggin about never using FUEL additives try that when temps are below cloud point. I think what the dealer in this original thread was trying to say was Cummins doesnt recommend using ENGINE OIL additives. He just had his facts mixed up. Bill

I've used fuel additives (Stanadyne) in almost ever tank in both my '94 Ford and new '04 Cummins.

My Dad has used Silo in almost everytank in his '96 12V Cummins with about 150K miles on it since new.

My Uncle, who drives trucks cross country, adds it to every tank without fail.

I've never heard of a failure of either injectors or Injection pump from using fuel additives... They seem like cheap insurance as well as a good centene boost.

My 2-cents.

Jeff

Heres a thought..... might fuel additives effect the cat in the 04. 5's?

I bought some Rotella DFA I was going to add sparingly, just for lubrication (Calif fuel), but remembered the new cats!

I checked Rotella's site, no mention of cats and they want a bunch of personal information just to email them a question... I didn't see any way to ask Cummin's on their site but maybe I need to go back and look again.

I know, some of you want to throw the cat away anyhow... . but where I live I could be facing bi-annual smog checks soon... :(

Any ideas before I put something in my tank that might cause me grief in the future?

Thanks, DanDee

Good thinking, Dan!! This never occurred to me. I doubt that any of the additives on the market would effect the cat, but I guess you never know.
