Fuel additives

I have a 4. 5 Common Rail with 73000 miles. I have never put in any additives for injector cleaning or anything else. I am wondering if this might be a good thing to do. I have gone through the last two years of TDR magazines and can't find a lot if info on additives. So, I there is anyone out there who might be able to direct me to the proper additive or if I should be using any additives at all.

With the new ultra low sulfur diesel, I have been adding Stanadyne performance formula to add lubricity and cetane. It may or may not work but if it does it is pretty cheap insurance and peace of mind.

What is Stanadyne supposed to do for cleaning the injectors? And how often would you put it in?

There's no way anyone can authoritatively tell you what additive to run. People can only offer their opinions, and will naturally think that whatever they run is "the best".

The best thing to do when selecting an additive, is to decide what you want to emphasize - lubricity, water emulsification/demulsification, cetane boost, or cleansing. Then choose an additive that best meets your needs, and follow the manufacturers recommendations for dosage (quantity and frequency).

Some of the more popular additives are:
Stanadyne
Power Service
Ashless 2-stroke engine oil
Valvoline diesel injector cleaner (endorsed by Cummins)
Cummins Asphaltene fuel conditioner
Howe's
Biodiesel (minimum 2%)

There are others... but I don't know them all.

Complete waste of money IMO. There is no proof that any of them do anything. I have had several CR trucks up to and beyond 100k miles, no additives, no problems. There are also plenty who have used additives and lost injectors. To each his own, but to me, its all snake oil

I added some Stanadyne to my last tank. Unlike the PS (crap) it made a significant difference in reducing engine noise (knock) and did not reduce my mileage. I would add it again.



I have a few ford friends who add it to every tank.

The FAQ on the Cummins site says no additives are recommend for ISB engines in Dodge trucks.

Additives may ... (or may not) be fine and dandy for keeping the injector tips clean, but they don't do a thing for the faulty electronics on top of the injectors!!!!

I have been running the Lucus additive with most fill ups, it seems to quiet the injectors some.

The mind is a funny thing though, I used to think that my vehicles seemed quicker or smoother when I waxed them. :-laf
