I have this kit I just haven't installed it yet but I'm wondering how it works with that brass cap on the hose ? How does the air get out ?

The cap is used for plugging up the original vent on the tank. Dave just sticks it on the new hose so it doesn't get lost during shipping. You are cutting in a new vent at the highest part of the tank using the hose and bulkhead fitting.

Instructions are here... .

Hmmm, I thought brass was undesirable in diesel fuel systems.

on the diesel loco's at work, the older ones [made in 50's & 60's] have copper fuel lines and brass/bronze fittings. . some of the fittings there are still original, but the brass/copper/bronze holds up pretty well there with the diesel fuel...

Well I finally got off my butt and installed my vent kit yesterday after having bought it over 9 monthes ago. When I went to fill up I had put in 38 gallons and some change when the pump clicked. Best money I've spent on the truck so far :)

I just installed my vent kit tonight.

WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! :)

Filling the tank till the first time the pump shut off gave me 38 gallons!! I wonder how much I'll be able to take if I really top if off?

Evening fellas. . this may very well be my next mod. A few Q's. Scale of 1-10, 10 being full- blown diesel mechanic, how difficult? Has anyone come across any issues with the fuel gauge not working or being inaccurate when completed, and the all important fuel pump and lines, losing prime or what not? TIA

I'd probably say if it wasn't such a PITA to drop the dang tank, I'd give it a 1, if you include the PITA factor, a 2.

It isn't difficult to do at all. You should have a buddy around to help you drop and reinstall the tank, it'll make it a lot easier. Don't forget to drive and drive and drive to get as much fuel out of the tank as you can. I only went 6 or so miles past the DTE 0 and I still had about 6-7 gallons left. You would probably be safe going about 20 past.

I second it as a 2... Dave's instructions are excellent and there is no reason not to do this... It is the single best mod I have ever done to a vehicle!

The only thing I would add is to make sure you have the right tools before you begin.

My Craftsman 1/2" drive socket just wasn't quite deep enough and I wound up splitting my knuckle open on the tank's metal shield.

Use a 3/4" drive socket and a long extension. Better yet, use an impact wrench.

With the right tools, a friend to help, and Dave's instructions it is very simple.

Fuel expansion w/vent kit

For those of you wondering how far you can fill your tank and park it full of fuel with the tank vent mod without it leaking. I live in Tucson, AZ and typically fill my tank up to where the fuel is almost up to the vent line in the filler neck. The drive home from where I fuel is ~6 miles. I installed the vent kit with the bulkhead fitting positioned with the nut inside the tank maximizing the air space (~1/2"). Many times the truck has been left parked full of fuel in the summer in full sun for over a week and has never leaked anywhere.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. I'll be moving forward on this mod shortly. Muffler Eliminaton first! Just filled the tank the other day anyhow, got about 550 miles to go. I've gone WAY past 20 DTE before, and got very lucky (33. 34+) G. It cant be easy to control a tank that large and awkward with 5 or 6 gals of fluid in it!

:-laf I thought I was bad, have had mine for 6 months. At least yours is installed. I kept telling my self I would do it before it got to hot. Well it is now to hot. Now I will wait until fall, only 3 months to go.

DZink24 I see you have an 04. You might want to check to see if you have the extra 1/4" vent fittings on your tank. If your truck has them there are two, one in the top front of the tank and one in the top rear. The problem is that the front one is recessed into a depression on the tank and in wet conditions can leak water and junk into the tank. I don't remember what model year trucks were fitted with these tanks and the extra fittings and I couldn't find the original post by searching. Maybe someone else can. Anyway if you have them most of us ran 1/4" fuel line from the vents, tee'd them together and put a small motorcycle type filter inline. I seem to remember that some later trucks were shipped with an extension hose on the front fitting.

I have had the kit for 2 months but can't seem to get the tank empty and my "want to" going at the same time. Oo.

I second that but I have had mine for over 6 months!!!... . I am also too chicken to "bite the bullet AND shed TWO arms and one leg AND my first born to fill it up from E... . ever since I bought my truck never let it go below 1/2..... I guess it is a mind screw thing... ... . hummm... I have a teenager... get him to do most of the dirty work on the mod and then give him to the gas station dude for a full tank... hummm... that would work!

fill amount

with about 1 gallon in tank (I just did the vent mod TODAY) I was able to put in 36. 5 gallons today at the El Dorado Hills, CA Chevron station. (~1,000' above sea level) It was about 78 degrees F.

I have a short bed 4X4 QC. Those of you who are getting 40+ gallons in the tank after the mod, I have some questions: Do you have the long bed? (I know dodge rates the LB at 35 gallons from the factory the short bed at 34) Is the LB tank nominally larger than +1 gallon than the SB tank?

If you're getting 40+ gallons into a SB tank- I can only say this: Either the gas pump calibration is FUBAR and you are getting ripped off, or Dodge is using different tank suppliers which vary in size and you got lucky

an got a big one! hmmmm... There IS a thrid possibility of course, it involves steaming piles of Bovine excrement.

I have a long bed and based upon the amount of fuel I put into the tank after I did the vent mod then I am guessing that mine holds about 42 gallons or so. I don't know how it compares to the 34 gallon tank, I haven't looked at them. I always use the same pump to fill up with so if it is off then I would never notice.
