2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission fuel backup in filler neck?????

I have a 02 and have a hard time filling her up fuel backs up out the filler neck??? anyone had this issue only way to fill is really slow... . HELP im tired of smelling like diesel... .

There is a sizeable air pocket in each end of the tank. Tank will hold around five gallons more if you can fill these areas. Don't know if that is prudent or not, especially in hot weather. (expansion) I have a 90 gal. tank ion the bed with a pump to transfer to main tank, if I pump while driving I can get the tank FULL. Someone makes a kit that can be installed so you can get more fuel in tank withiout the constant backup. I'm sure someone on here will chime in with the source of this kit. bg

could be a rollover vent... . when you undo the filler cap do you get a hissing sound?? if so than that is the issue. If not then it could be a clogged filler tube.

I would check the vent tube that attaches to the side of the filler neck. On the vent kits, if they were installed so that fuel could pool in a low spot in the new vent line, the air wouldn't vent properly out of the tank and fuel would spit out of the fill neck. Yours might be kinked or somehow blocked.

could be a rollover vent... . when you undo the filler cap do you get a hissing sound?? if so than that is the issue.

My 99' hisses like crazy when you take the cap off. What and where can you get a rollover vent? Not trying to steal the thread, just curious

Look in the neck. If you still have the reducer plate, take it out. Diesel tends to foam when it goes in and that will let pressure out faster! I did this so I could use the big pumps at the truck stops. Good Luck, Moe

Also if you have a FASS your not supposed to have engine running while filling, it will back up. May happen with other brands also.

I do have FASS ... I will shut off and see if theres a difference... but why would it cause it to backup???

i think he is talking about the fass or air dog with the filters. they return the unused fuel with entrapped air into the filler neck.

That is correct, I have the 150, I think due to high flow and return at idle it will back up. i figured this out years ago. And I believe it is in FASS instructions not to idle while fueling. Since I have an Espar I don't care anymore!

The only time I've had a problem filling the fuel tank is if the truck is running, even with the stock lift pump.

I don't have one of those never did. I think 2nd gen did not come with those so we could use the bigger nozzles. Oh I have AirDog and while I have not tried it I think when idling enough fuel would be returned to the filler neck to cause a back up.

The rollover vents are vents in the tank that are designed to close in case of a rollover, preventing fuel from spilling. If they become clogged, it will cause your tank not to vent properly. This is why you are getting the hissing sound when you remove the fuel cap. As to where to get them. . i would think your local dealer would have them or a chain auto parts store.

I had a 1996 V10, there was a recall as some of the Dodges did not come with the roll over valve
