As I read the last issue (71) of TRD I came across and article that caught my eye, It was titled A reponse to Doug Leno's Article on page 100 in issue 71. As I was reading the article I came to the conclusion that fuel boxes are not good for third generation diesels. Did I read that article right? The reason I ask is because I want to install something to increase power. Drag racing runs deep in my blood and I would like to just have a bit more power. What is a good modification to achieve this goal on my truck?

I believe its any sort of power adder that increases injection pressure that is the problem. Adding fuel and/or timing isn't as bad...

There is more information about the effect of pressure boxes on HPCR engines in your copy of TDR Issue 72 when it arrives. Read the Technical Topics article by Joe Donnelly paying close attention to the last paragraph on page 49 and the first paragraph on page 50. Also read the Q & A section of his article titled "Rail Pressure vs Fuel Mileage".

No, you missed the qualifying statements. "Heavy fueling without sufficient air", "pressure only boxes" , and "marginal fuels" is what Joe is calling out in the article.

Just the normal results of throwing too much fuel and not enough air at the engine. ANY diesel is going to suffer under those circumstances, not just a CR.

A combination of pressure that goes too high too long is hard on the injectors, where a quicker ramp is not. That was not really spelled out in there very well.

Same with marginal fuels, you can't throw used engine oil or ATF into a HPCR system and expect the same results as a 12V.

Your fine adding a box that does fuel, timing, and even pressure in moderation. You can't run a pressure box on the highest setting constantly, but, a marginal increase does help.

Keep in mind his article has alot of info that is not any good anymore. Van AAken is long out of business and he make no mention of Marco's Smarty line. Also PDQ does not make a fueling box anymore for the CR's and the 6. 7's were not even included as they were not in existence.

IMO,you have two choices for the 5. 9 CR that are the best and both are recent additions to the fueling for CR's. The new Smarty SSR which is the most adjustable programmer available and the endless amounts of tunes are just being scratched now. And since you have a 06 you could wait for the release of EFI Live which has made a HUGE splash in the Duramax end and the Cummins side will be all new.

I have both a Smarty S06 with a TNR/R program and just bought the newest Smarty SSR to try and control my low end smoke somewhat better. Going to strap mine down and load the newest Smarty and see what we get right after the holiday compared to my S06. .

That link you said was done awhile ago. So will it apply to a third generation HPCR cummins?

All of it is 3rd Gen related. As I stated, it is dated, but gives a great insight on how the products work and have evolved over time. I believe it is worthwhile info, even without the inclusion of Smarty.

Now having said that... I also believe the Smarty JR would be a great 1st time purchase for you. It comes with 3 basic tunes, Economy / Towing / Performance, and also has adjustable options such as timing, torque management, Fuel rail press?(not sure on pressure), you can change your tire size to calibrate/correct speedo issues, and also read and clear codes. You will love it.

At this time, I believe the Smarty S06/POD or SSR is not suited to your situation, neither is EFI Live.
