Correct, the 97-99 filter are an open element in a metal canister. I like this setup much better than the "cans" we have to replace on the 94-96 trucks. I tried to retrofit a 97-99 canister on my 1996 and it would not fit because the vacume break booster (1997's went to hydroboost breaks) is in the way and there is not enough room to install it in the stock location.

Hi, I also had a Fleetguard filter leak (severely) from the seam at the bottom of the filter about 3 months ago. At first, I thought it was the return line going again :{ . Just one more reason to always carry a spare filter in the truck. I wonder if there is a bad lot of filters floating around out there.
