After changing fuel filter today it seems that the stock plastic filter

cap wants to crossthread onto the filter base. My question is does the cap have a cummins or mopar part# and what is it?

2001 LWD 4x4 quadcab.

I think you could get it at either Dodge or Cummins. Cummins mite be cheaper. But make sure it is for Dodge just in case it is different then med duty trucks (Freightliner, Ford... ).

I recall a write up in the TDR saying use a big wrench on it not the square fitting for (3/8 or is it 1/2) drive or cap can become

distorted.

Does this help?

I believe there is a newer part # for the cap that eliminates the "square hole" so people are not tempted to remove it usuing a drive. I believe there is even a TSB pertaining to the "cracking" of fuel filter caps. Let me look it up.

See this for more information : TSB 14-02-00

I would call both Cummins and Dodge to see which one will give you the better price. Tell them yours is "Cracked" and mention this TSB

Filter

I recently changed my fuel filter for the first time recently. I believe the socket that fit was 1 1/8", and a 6 point would be best. It was a 1/2" drive socket. I also used a torque wrench to tighten it to spec. If I remember correctly, I think I noticed Fleetguard name on the filter cannister someplace??? Maybe they have a supplier that can get you a new top piece.

They do crossthread real easy, you have to be real carefull. Every time i change mine it take two or three times to get it started on straight, good luck.

When I changed my fuel filter for the first time I went to cummins Northwest here in Anchorage and tried to get a spare cap, no dice they had to order it. So I went to Dodge and paid $38 for a new one. I wish I could have got a kiss with that one. But I now have a spare.

By the way, the cap came off real easy and went back on just as easy. No problems and no need for the new cap.....
