after being home for 2 days with a bout of kidney stones:eek: ,i was able to get outside today and change the fuel filter. after reading the posts here for tips, and a very helpful call to geno's,i gave it a try. the last 3 changes,i paid to have it done. anyways,it took me less than 25 minutes. after i drained it. i took the water sensor out, probably the hardest part. then i undid the top nut and the can fell right off. no filter wrench was needed or large channel locks as i have read here. cleaned everything and put it back together. pushed on the primer about 150 times, and it started right up:D . i now wish i had tried this myself earlier. probably one of the easier things i have done.

:) :)

I did my '97 for the first time 2 weeks ago. Like you I have been spending my hard earned cash to let somebody (who I don't know if they primed it right) change the filter.

I jumped into it and can't get over how easy it was to do. Boy do I feel dumb for paying somebody else to do it.

It is absolutely criminal what these dealers charge for a fuel filter change ($100. 00+). I decided to attempt it at 10k miles and have been doing it ever since. Just gets easier every time.

Forrest My 96 has the spin on. I'd like to reward the designer with a ride on my craftsman vice.

OH MY  :--)

that's what the lady at the banana split shop asked ... ..... "would you like your nuts crushed? "

Sure how would you like your tits twisted?

Not bad! But considering you can buy the filter for around $15. 00 and about 20 mins labor it is still pretty high. They charged a buddy of mine $100. 00 to replace the fuel filter in his 24V and that dealership is "Enumclaw Dodge" in WA state - what a rip off.

My 97 has a spin on behind the frame under the cab, & a canister under the hood. The first time I changed the fuel filter ( I always do it my self) There was NO fuel filter in the canister WTF:eek:  I bought the truck used so I guess the previeus (sp?) owner forgot to put one back in, good thing for the spin on.

$58 for a dealer change is a good deal especially when their going rate for just the filter is usually $47. Need to find out what they will charge if you bring in your own filter?

They charged $43 for the filter and $15 for the install. I like to have my dealer service my truck. They are good and very reasonable. This way if I ever do have a problem I have a good relationship with them and I also have the extended 5 year 100K miles Dodge service contract. I've owned Mercedes and Lexus cars and have never gotten better service then I have from Aurora Dodge in Aurora Missouri. They are just a bunch of good old, small town honest people, that want to do the best for the customer. I use to live in Atlanta Ga. , it is shocking the difference in the way you are treated. You can have the big cities, I'm staying out here in the country :)

Pitbull What area of the USA are you in?

Yeah, I let the stealer do it the first couple of times. I don't remember how much it was, but I remember the filter was something like $46.

Then, after reading on this forum how to do it, step by step, I decided to do it myself. I was really happy with the price of the filter from Cummins, *WAY* less than $46.

The most interesting part was when I got to looking at the nut on top of the filter canister. Not a single scratch:confused: That's when I decided to never let the stealer touch my truck again. The filter was reall black, and guess what? The nut had scratches on it when I was done, paint chipped from every corner. I guess the high price they charge you is to be able to afford those special non-scratching wrenches they use...

So guys, those of you who let the dealer "change" your filter, check the nut just to make sure they actually did the job...

The attitude i have with my truck and most of my mechanical equipment, from boats to chain saws, is that i will take more time and care to do whatever task correctly, if not over-do it. Anything you can teach yourself to do to your vehicle will familiarize you with it and you know it's done right

That is a good point. Even though I trust my Dealer and I can stand there and watch them do the work, I alway mark the filters before I take the truck in and I alway check them after they are done. I also check the oil level to make sure it is right. Had a Lexus dealer forget to put oil in a car once :( , one of though dealerships where they take your car away and you can't see what they are doing. That will never happen to me again.
