I change them myself and keep the receipt and good records of the work. Oil changes, on the other hand, are something I let the dealer do (I supply oil and filter) so that I don't have to mess with 3 gallons of drain oil and climb under the truck.

I was refering to step 8 in the instructions pictured above, says something about letting the fuel soak in?



It sounds like an easy enough job, Ill try doing it this weekend on my 03, mileage will be around 5600 by then.

I read that in step 8 and it still makes no sense to me not to drain and thoroughly clean out that cannister before you put in and prime the filter. The instructions in the shop manual contradict the written instructions. The old fuel systems were much harder to service than our common rails. The self priming feature of the system would, in my opinion, preclude the need of any kind of priming other than cycling the pump one or two times by "bumping" the start position on the ignition. I would think that leaving the old fuel in the cannister would allow contamination of the new filter and allow debris into the fuel system.



It is an easy job to do yourself, be sure to use the socket wrench and not try to put an extension in the square hole on the cannister top, others have cracked the top doing that. Personally, I think that you can go at least 10 or 12 K between filter changes (15K is the recommended). I changed mine at 7500 miles and it certainly did not need it. I carry a spare filter and socket wrench under my back seat so I could change it if I have to by the side of the road.

Dirty filter

From the looks of that filter, I think I would purchase diesel somewhere else. I change my filter 6000-8000 miles and have never had one that looked that dirty. Mine usually looks like I have wasted time and money replacing the filter.
