Not sure what the article is right off, but if you have the cannister type ('97-up?), drain the cannister first, using the water/sediment drain cock on the housing. It will drain the fuel through the "straw" that runs out of the housing. There is not really a contamination issue on the spin-on filters, unless you get trash into the top of the filter as you struggle and fuss to put it back on!
On my '03, I drain the housing with the yellow drain handle, then remove the filter. I have the metal top cap from Genos. I would HIGHLY recommend it if your filter comes out the top (cartridge/cannister type).
