Well I just changed my fuel filter after 20k + miles. Man was it ever black! It looked like I had been filtering my exhaust. It that normal? I guess this new ULSD is cleaning my fuel system.

My truck now smokes less and runs a smidge better (stock).

Also warrenty is up sooooooo the famous line of "I am my own warrenty station applies" Let the bombing begin. :-laf I think and I going to do the smarty first.

Black fuel filter is normal. Asphaltenes in the diesel are the culprit and are normal. Would recommend changing fuel filter at 10k to 15k intervals though.

I agree with roper--better safe than sorry--it maybe alot sooner than recommended but it sure makes me feel better and it's cheap insurance IMO.

Good suggestion of changing sooner.

I already have the boost and pyro guages as they were installed at ~5k miles.

This way I have never over temped and have a good base line on how the engine reacts to various loads.

I always waited until 300F or less to shut off.

I change oil every 5K and fuel filter ever other oil change. If you get your diesel at a reputable dealer and you don't drive through a dust storm, I see no reason to change the fuel filter more often.

I have done all of my trucks fuel filter changes at 10k. I think the reccomended interval is 15k, wouldn't chance 20k. I'd start changing it a little more often:) If you have to deal with cold weather 10k is a good bet, I have had problems going beyond that figure in the past.

Have fun Rotty. This is why we all have these trucks and subscribe to TDR. Lots of great ideas out there. I concur with gauges first (which apparently you have). Smarty was my choice but am a bit disappointed with the amount of smoke even while driving carefully. I hear they are someday going to attempt to rectify this for us old farts that just want better performance for trailer towing and leave the racing for those who cam afford it. The best things I have done (without affecting the warranty) is the AFE stage II and Geno's muffler elimination kit. This made a significant change in the performance and listing to the turbo spool up is music to my ears. The muffler elimination really didn't make much of a difference in overall higher decibel sound level it just made it sound better to me... Good luck and have fun.

Also there is no such thing as "good enough" filtration. A 2 micron filter is what bostch recomends. Also it is a good idea to change about every 10k miles

Hey Rotty, how's it hanging? Haven't seen you around for a while.

When I had the white 04. 5 I changed the fuel filter at 2500+/- miles, it was really black. I changed it again at 5k+/- miles and the filter looked fairly clean. It may just be all the crud that a new rig has in it from the factory, and it looked the same every time I changed it after that.

Hey guys; check this out: Diesel Performance Products, Parts, BD & Cummins Diesel Performance (scroll down to the "2 Micron Filter/Water seperater" kit near the middle of the home page)
I put this set-up on my beast, no need to run any filter element on the engine unless you just want something to fill the space with.
I started looking for something better when I changed to the 7 mic element last year. When I opened the box, I saw how cheap the new elements looked compared to the original part so got this instead-easier to change to.
Let me know what you think, M.

With a pressure gauge I found that it is easy to determine when to change the fuel filter based on its condition rather than just miles..... but..... I just had a big surprise when i found myself having to change the filter in the tank pickup. (actually you have to change the entire pickup assembly... approx $400) With the change the fuel pressure jumped up almost 5psi and WOT holds 7 psi instead of zero. Total miles on that filter is 350,000.

All, just changed my fuel filter for the first time (for the truck and first time of me doing it)... . after the install, i noticed my fp guage was fluxuating... assuming it's got a tad of air in the lines??? Also, i went from a 10 micron to a 7 micron..... and it appears that my fp is down 1-2 psi... . does that seem reasonable / normal?

There's no leaks, so i'm assuming the fuel canister lid is sealed properly... .

Thanks in advance...

Well I think you might have a fungus in your fuel tank. I just had the same situation with my truck. I change my fuel filter every 3000 miles. I got a fuel additive that removes the bacteria and fungus that grows in diesel fuel. It is called boi-kleen diesel fuel biocide. I ordered it from Power Service Products, diesel fuel additives, prevent gelling, clean injectors, disperse water, boost cetane, reduce emissions, improve fuel economy. If you are getting your fuel out of a tank above ground the heat will make the bacteria grow in the fuel. You might give it a try to see if it works for you. It did for me.
