Hey Guy's How hard is it to change out the fuel filter's on the new 6. 7 motor It's time and I called the dealer they gave me a quote of $45. 00 for filter assy. and $95. 00 to install it :eek:does that sound right ?Truck is going in for a oil change anyway can't beat the 45 for the oil change but was shocked at the price of the fuel flilter price . What have you paid ?

Thank you for all the help .

I haven't done it yet but I hear it isn't too hard. I hear you just disconnect the heater connector and the water in fuel connector and unscrew it. I believe it should have a drop in filter. Just make sure you clean it out good so the junk in the bottom doesn't go back into the engine. If you buy the filter you should be able to tell if it is a drop in or not. The common rails prime themselves when you turn on the key so it shouldn't be a prime issue.

Let us know if you do it how it turns out.

its not a drop in filter, the bowl and filter are a complete assembly. i paid 33 dollars for mine at the dealer. it is a bit of a pain in the ***. cause you will get a thread or two started and if the center does not line up after that it can cause it to cross thread. if it stops going in by hand after a couple threads start it is not lining up. you nedd to back it off a bit and wiggle it as you screw it in. may have to do it a couple of times to get it to go in. you will know when it stops cause it will need a wrench to make it go futher. you should be able to get it all the way by hand. all you are disconnecting is the water in fuel sensor. fuel warmer is not in the filter

Wow that's different. I thought they were going to continue the trend towards less metal in the filters and use the drop in's. Like I said, I haven't done it yet. :)

I'd make sure they are not quoting you for the whole filter head assembly... . I had one dealer do that to me and I had to show him on his computer that the filter is separate. Some parts guys are not really parts guys. I have seen the filters at different prices at different dealers but should be around $20-30... $45 seems a bit steep. The filter is not the easiest to replace but I take off the fender cover and tire to get to it. $95 for installation is a rip off... . the going rate of labor is about $80 an hour and if the tech is worth anything he/she can have this done quickly, it shouldn't take over an hour to do it

We just started to install a 10 micron water trap and 2 micron filter on the frame rail of our trucks... we put too many miles and are too far away from home most of the time... I've been lucky with the Dodges but the Fords we owned have taught me a lesson. I'm guessing that once that is done our factory filter will run 75-100K miles between changes... to my surprise the Donaldson branded filters we are using are $9 and $12 respectively and must be close to a quart in size... and it can't be more than a 10 minute process to crawl under the truck and change them where we have mounted them. .

Jim; is there a part # for the setup (filter system) you are useing?

Hey guys and Gal's :) yes I found out how eay it was to change dealer"s charge was 60 but I went to parts counter and had the guy show me a new one my next change i will be doing myself its easy screw off unhook a couple wires and screw it back on

being tall should make it a little easier plus a long arm just reach down to it . Thank you for all the advise . I miss my first gen but the 08 sure is growin on me Less pain to get into it cause it's not 6 ft in the air like my crewcab i had .

depending on your dealer the price of the filter may vary. dodge seems to have done a good deal by pricing the filter right. the book instructions are to remove front wheel and inner fender. that is where the $90. 00 may be coming from. 05183410aa retails $18. 90 list we charge $15. 20 to install during routine maint. I am sure my parts mgr will sell you all you want

barbwire. .

the filter is something that we made... . if there is an interest I'll post some photos...

I'm on the out of town so it will be 10 days or so

13k ... 6 oil changes ..... 1 Fuel filter... . Just changed my fuel filter, my truck stumbledand almost shut off. Igot my filter from the dealer for 20. 00, then carried it to Shiver Diesel, they installed it for me for free while i watched it took them maybe 45 seconds and they did it fro the fender well by just pulling up the plastic fender liner a little bit. they said they could not believe I got the filter for 20. 00 and said I should go back and buy all I could . Did the dealer make a mistake ?? They also said they saw some crud come out when they took mine off . . very messy .

no just the oil... . the dealer provides free oil changes for life. I believe i have a problem with my truck. The oil change req'd light has been coming on every 2200 miles +/- . I believe it is starting a regen and not finshing before I reach my destination, and as soon as I start it back up it tries to regen again and yes the oil is sooted up pretty bad so it really does need to be changed. I might lemon law it . Check engine light is on & off all the time, all kinds of codes w/ no mods. fuel filter has only been changed once @ 13k and it did not solve my problem with the truck stumbling but at least it is cheap and easy to change. Any body out there lemon law one yet ... possibly give me a heads up???
