Well I'm a little scared. Getting ready for my first fuel filter change on the 01. Take the lid off , the old one out, new O ring and drop in the new one, put the lid back on right ?Do you really have to drain the fuel out of the canister before changing the filter? That would mean bumping the starter to prime the canister back. Is this done with the lid off? Reading some of the posts on changing the filter got me a little nervous. My 92 was hard to get to but was kinda simple.

Thanks for the help

AL

Before you put the top back on pour some diesel fuel or fuel additive in canister to around 1/2 full. That way lift pump will not have to pump as much, its worked for me.

Not to worry Al !!

Al, I had no trouble when I did mine the first time. Drain the old fuel, remove the lid and toss the old filter. Wipe the inside with a lint free rag. I then filled my empty housing up to the grey fuel heater ring with fuel and installed the filter(slowly). Lube the o-ring with fuel and tighten the lid to specs.

Bump the starter(but don't start) and let the pump run one cycle. Then cycle the pump again and while it is running, hold the drain open. Mine spit air for a while and then a steady stream of fuel once the air was out of the system. Close the valve and you are done. Using this method, my truck started right up with no miss, cough or any other bad sounds. Good luck!!!

The 01's HO motors have a different fuel filter setup. When I change Mine, I never have a problem with re-starting. Just fill the canaster with diesel before you put in the new filter. If it will not start, floor it and crank till it does. :) :) :) :) :)

ahuber

shouldn't be a problem. if you have someone to help you, bleed the schrader valve at the top back of the filter, while someone bumps the starter to cycle the pump. when you get fuel and no air, it ought to crank right up. might run a little rough at first. pretty hard to get every bit of air out, but should run and finish purging the air.
