My Cummins is ready for a fuel filter change. (no problems, just regular maintenance) After searching the site for fuel filter change info, I came across this in a post.

"I always fill my filter too, but I do it by using the priming lever per the manual. Open the air bleed screw and start pumping. When fuel runs out around the screw, close it and you are ready to go.

Depending on where your engine has stopped, you may need to bump the starter to be able to stroke the pump. Usually it takes several, possibly a couple dozen pumps to fill the filter. This is the recommended procedure in the manual. "

My question is - where is the air bleed screw? Probably a dumb question, but this is the first time I'll change a diesel fuel filter. Also, which brand is best? Been using Fleetguard for the oil.

Thanks,

JFitz

I've got a photo, I just can't get it under the 32000 size requirements... . My Photopoint account also went south... If you want the pic I can email it to you.

If you can email it to me I'll put it up on my site. (I'm curious to know where the bleed screw is myself! :D )

Thanks,

Mike

I don't use the screw. Just leave the filter loose, pump till its full, tighten the filter and then start. Havn't had any problems doing it this way.

Guys:

The bleeder screw is directly above the filter. On the filter head you will see two screws/fuel lines. Look for the upper one, this one will run from the filter head to the injection pump. There will be a large brass nut and a little one in the center of it. Just loosen the little one in the center (I believe it's a 10 mm nut). Not very hard to find, just takes a while to find if you haven't located it before. I found out by my Haynes manual.

Hope this helps,

John
