fuel filter changing

Reading my new copy of Construction Equipment magazine, I found a section regarding changing fuel filters with tech tips from Caterpillar. One thing they stressed was to NOT pre-fill the filter. The reason they gave was that the fuel you pour into the filter will not be filtered before going to the injector pump.



My question is, if you put the filter on dry, crack the bleeder screw, and then use the plunger to fill the filter, will THAT fuel be filtered as it comes into the filter?

Bill, not "as it comes into the filter" but rather as it passes though it. Problem prefilling the filter is that you pour unfiltered fuel into the clean side of the filter as well as the dirty side.



I've gotten lazy about the manual pump on 12 valves and now just open the filter bleed screw then pressurize the fuel tank though the fill hole with an air nozzle wrapped in a rag. Takes about 15 seconds to fill the filter and bleed the air. No need to get carried away, it takes very little pressure to push fuel from the tank to the filter.
