Drained the fuel filter for the fist time this past weekend. The only problem that I encountered was getting the diesel fuel all over the frame and differential rather than in the drain pan that I placed underneath the drain hose. I do remember another post on this topic but couldn't seem to locate it. Is there an easier and neater way to drain any moisture out of the fuel filter? Also at what intervals should I drain the filter? i know that if the water in fuel light comes on that it should be drained but how often othe than that.

Thanks for the help

I secured a small plastic bottle to a wooden dowel and hold it under the drain from above. The manual recommends draining some fuel at each fill up but most people don't. I drain a little out when I think of it. bg

Ditto on the above. I cut off a small section of "shortey" (Ahh, I mean the fuel drain line ) and matched it up with a replacement from the local hardware store. "Shortey" was tossed into the circular file and the new legnth was put in place. Now it reaches to the ground(the fuel drain line) #ad
and I just tuck it up into the frame when not in use.

Me2 on the hose extension. Only problem is that I only had YELLOW hose around th garage - looks kinda funky from the wheel well. BUT I do always drain into an empty Hose Cuervo bottle - to check for H2o and gunk. Never found either to date.

The problem is not to check the H20 at a particular interval, but to check it just after you pick up a bunch of water!!!!
In about 1986 to 1988, I was running around under a black cloud.
Four times in that two year period, while traveling, I picked up lots of water--to the extent that when the injector pump failed (yea, since there was no Dodge-Cummins, I was driving a ford), the fuel filter was FULL of water.
Of course having been buying fuel where ever I ran low, I really had very little basis to try to hold who ever's bad fuel it was responsible.
When traveling the back roads of Eastern Oregon and Idaho, there is often very little choice of where to buy fuel--other than where you can find it. I often suspected Denio (right on the Oregon-Nevada border )where the diesel pump was a raised metal tank out behind the station was one of the culprits, but then the next available diesel was at least 7o miles away----not an option when you are nearing empty.
Buying those injector pumps go real old.
The only lession I learned, was to check it often.

If you want to add a longer hose, but don't want to have it hang down or wind it up, go to the local auto/hardware store. Buy a 1/4 inch vacume hose fitting. Thats the straight through one with jagged ends. You don't have to remove the stock one. Make another hose long enough to go into a drain can, attach the vacume hose fitting securely into the new hose, and plug it into the stock fitting loosely. In this way it can be removed. To store, just make a circle. No mess, nothing hanging down to catch on.
