ok. thing is i am tired of fighting changing the fuel filter and having it leak 1000 miles later  . I dont know if anyone else has had this prob but im done with it. can anyone tell me what the two electrical plugs that run into the fuel filter housing are for. I am assuming one is a water sensor. I have already unpluged both with no lights coming on in the cab but want to be sure this isnt going to raise a problem somewhere else once i eliminate the housing for a screw on style filter.

The plug towards the bottom is the WIF sensor. Only problem leaving it unplugged is that water will not be detected and the dash light will never go on. Not a big deal if you get decent fuel.

The other connector with wires into the canister top is the fuel heater. Should not be a big problem to leave it unplugged. I think it only works at 35* or below. I would not want to be without it where I am, but you in CA may be able to get by without the heater.

As far as leaks go, I guess I can't help much as I've never had an issue with mine. Would it be possible to update to the newer 2nd gen style drop-in filter? That way you could retain the WIF and fuel heater the way they are supposed to be but get a filter that is a lot easier to change.

The filter canister for the '00-05 will fit. The only issue is the electrical connectors are different. I'm looking at doing this change myself. Just have not found a filter canister. Filters are less expensive as well.

thanks for the input. i very seldom see temps below 35 and have as of yet to have a problem with bad fuel. I do go to utah to see family every winter but im thinking that this can be easily overcome with fuel addatives and underhood temp. is the 00 to 05 a screw on filter or a different canister filter.

00-05 filters are a drop in canister. Unscrew the top and pull out the filter with the lid. I love that compared to screw on filters in tight places on the older trucks.
