Well, I got my fuel filter for my 2004. 5 from Genos the other day and I am now wondering just how you put it in. In looking at the fuel filter housing, I can't figure out what kind of a tool I should use to get the top of the housing off. Any other good ideas as what process I should be using to put the replacement filter in.

Thanks for your help. Sorry to be so ignorant on this subject, but I have never done it before.

doing a search would give you some info.

but a large cresent wrench of a 1-1/8th (I think) socket will get the top off.

drain filter canister, pull out old filter, remove O-ring, install new O-ring, put everything back in, prime system by bumping starter a few times and your good to go.

just make sure to close the drain valve before you prime the system back up. I tend to check that thing about 5 times before I prime mine back up:rolleyes:

Yes, it's a 1-1/8" socket. An extension and a universal joint will make the job easier, but it not required.

The old filter will come out with the cap, then you just pop it off. That's not quite as easy to do as it sounds, but you can pop it off with your hands.

Remove the O-ring from the cap. Lubricate the new O-ring (it comes with the filter) with diesel fuel, and put it on before you clip the new filter to the cap.

Put it all back together, don't overtighten the cap (snug is good enough). CLOSE THE DRAIN VALVE and bump the starter like Drew said.

It really is a piece of cake. :D

i put a little lubriplate on the o-ring to lube it... that stuff is awsome... i use it on everything at work... coat gaskets [paper/rubber/steel] with it and they come off real easy later on...

That's probably a very good idea, but diesel fuel is handy when you're changing the filter! ;)

Put something under it big enough to catch to the fuel when you drain the filter canister. I missed my bucket by about and inch :(

or extend the drain hose... when i did mine, half went into the bucket, the other half ran down the diff and dribbled on the driveway :(
