Improved MPG !

Mileage went up 1 MPG since fuel filter change. ??? I wouldn't think that a higher restriction filter would improve mileage. Perhaps it didn't but at $3. 15/gallon I'll take everything that I can get.

drain filter housing [yellow lever on base of housing] - close when done

unscrew the filter cap

remove oil filter

remove old o-ring off cap thread base

visually inspect filter housing and see if there is any debris in the bottom. if there is you can clean it out, but make sure no dirt gets into the filter stand pipe [clean side]

stick new filter in housing

lube new o-ring with fuel oil or lube oil or grease

install cap back on housing [snug is good, too tight and you can split the cap]

bump engine with starter to prime system for ±30sec or so

start engine, and visually inspect for leaks around filter housing

Instead of bumping the starter to refill canister, what about just pouring fuel into it? About 3/4 full before inserting the filter should just about do it?
 
Its just hard to beat Geno's garage on filters. Fleetguard is the way to go.

Out west here I belong to the Cummins Power Booster's and get the discount prices. Peterbilt agencies also give good discounts. Just ask the local partsman to put it on the "Widows and Orphans Fund" I never pay retail and certanly do not buy from my dealer.

you could do that, but any fuel you manage to get into the stand pipe in the center will be unfiltered and could hurt your HP fuel system components. much easier/safer to just use the lift pump to prime the system

That makes good sense and I hadn't thought of it. I haven't changed mine yet and didn't really know how many bumps or how long to bump it.



Sure don't want air in the line.
 
Bumping the starter for just a fraction of a second will cause the lift pump to operate for approximately 17 seconds.



I don't know how bad this is but I usually clean the housing and install the filter. Then I put the filter lid on a few turns. Bump the starter, run to the front and tighten the filter. Some times I make it before it starts overfilling, sometimes I don't. But it always starts.
 
Replaced fuel filter today

The instruction helps a lot. It took me approximately 20 minutes to replace mine. It helps if you have a swivel 3/8 " adapter attach to a 6" (3/8") adapter to remove the plastic cover. The cap is very tight! Draining the fuel is easier compare to my Ford F250 Powerstroke.
 
Alright, I should probably know this but how often does Cummins recommend draining the water out of the filter housing and how often to change the filter?

I recommend adding the following. Slip a 24" long piece of garden hose over the filter drain hose and it is mush easier to get the fuel into the beer bottle or Drain can (I use a can) :rolleyes: . Keeps it off the front differential. :--)
